transmission problem V70-XC70

My friend has a '98 V70. It's front wheel drive, not AWD. He called me the other day and told me that the transmission has been slipping. He said that in order to get it to go he had to shift to L and manually shift it up. His car has 158 K miles. On my FWD's, I know how to flush the fluid out. I was going to do that on his this weekend and see if it helps matters. Has anyone experienced a similar problem with these cars? Neither of my 870's have done this and both have around 200 K miles. They've always had their fluid changed though.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

If you can flush and 850, you will have no questions about a '98 V70. As far as I can remember, they are identical set-ups, turbo or not.

Yeah they're the same pretty much. My mom's 2000 S70 turbo has a similar setup as my '97 850 turbo with the transmission flush procedures. On the V70, I guess the fluid level could just be low. He has never changed the fluid, so I know that it's due for it.

Thanks,
Dave

If it's an auto 5 speed ('00 and newer, I believe), make sure NOT to use Dextron. Use Mobil-3309 or the expensive Volvo stuff, or else you can fubar that transmission.

Is the Mercon Dextron III okay for the '98?

Thanks,
Dave

Yeah, that's what the '98 takes. If you're going to flush it anyway, you might consider going to synthetic Mobil-1 ATF. That's what I did on my '98 S70 and it shifts very smoothly!

Well, I flushed the V70's transmission fluid this past weekend. It was filthy and dark brown in color. It took 12 quarts of flushing to clean it up. The car still engages into reverse sort of roughly. The engine kind of shifts around when going into reverse. Any idea as to what this would be?

Thanks in advance.
Dave

Motor Mount maybe?

The wife had a Grand am with a bad motor mount, when you shifted into reverse, the whole engine would shift in place and you could hear and feel it.
