Brake rotor problems S40-V40

My friend has a 2003 S40. I changed the front rotors and pads with OE Volvo parts. Now, the vibrating is back under braking. I cleaned all of the mating surfaces and torqued the wheel bolts after I installed the new brakes. To make sure, I pulled the rotors, had them turned, and torqued the wheel back on. The problem returned after a while. I'm thinking that it has to be one or both front calipers.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Did you grease both slide bolts? They need to be cleaned every time the caliper comes off and the pads changed.
Did you brake in the pads before you gave the car back?

Are the slides like the ones on the older 700 series Volvos? If so, I didn't grease them. I did break the pads in after installation. My friend also took it to a local garage and had the rotors turned, and pads sanded down but the pulsing came back in a week or so.

      Thanks,
      Dave

Slides must be cleaned greased when ever they are removed.

Read this on pad break in: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_bedincontents.shtml

Hmmm...the message that I'm getting from that article is that rotors with uneven amounts of pad deposit on them cannot be reused. Does this mean that turning them will not be effective even if I break them in afterward as the article suggests?

          Thanks,
          Dave

I do not believe that OEM rotors are "designed" to wear as fast as the pads on newer cars. It is just that the rotors are made as light as possible and after a set of pads is worn out, the rotors are then too thin to turn without having enough thickness to absorb more heat.
Because your rotors are still new and probably have glazing on them from the new pads, the turning process should not compromise the rotors. Most shops remove very little metal during turning, the object is to have a flat surface without any grooving or lips.
I would, in your case, have the rotors turned again, clean and liberally grease the slides, and reuse the same pads. Break them in properly without stopping the car during the process and see if it gets any better.
Next time, try slotted rotors. That will allow gases under the pad to escape and help break in the pads.

I am told that the OEM rotors on the newer models are made to wear with the pads. When I change mine, I will use aftermarket rotors.
