Agree with KlausC. Replace the transmission fluid!! If you buy it used with over 50,000 miles do it right away.

KlausC is right, change about 30,000 miles S70

Especially do it if it has never been changed! It might help prolong the life of the transmission, and every year you can put off replacing a multi-thousand $ purchase is more money in your pocket. BMW had a big controversy/scandal about their "lifetime" auto transmission fluid, and now they recommend a change at 100,000 miles. Knowledgable mechanics recommend much more often than that, but most lease-type buyers don't care, so typically it is the second owner who pays the price for the lack of maintenance.

I depends a lot on the year it was made. 1998 should have a flush every 30K miles. Synthetic fluid trannies every 60K miles, you can use Mobile 3309 fluid.
