Don't know about factory letters but I easily removed a dealer's metal name tag with naphtha (Coleman stove fuel). I had no intention of driving their ad all around town. I would not leave naphtha on for a moment longer than necessary to do the job, though.

You know what also works. Good 'ol WD-40. Spray some on the adhesive holdlng the badges in place. After a few minutes use some dental floss behind the badge to separate it from the car. Be sure to wipe clean and wax afterwards. OK for the paint and no scratches.

Don't use nail polish remover. Use some denatured alcohol mixed with some water. When you get all of the adhesive off, polish and wax the area too!

My "850" fell off and I want to glue it back on. What should I use?

I've put my Volvo Sash on my egg crate grille (one of my mods) with 3M weatherstrip adhesive (it's yellow in color) and it stays very well. I think it would work great for your emblems to body panels too.
