Value of '97 GLT sedan? 850 1997

Hello-

There is a chance that I may be purchasing my best friend's '97 850 GLT sedan. I have some knowledge about the car, as it is a light-pressure turbo model, which is what I like. She's the second owner and here's what's been done to the car as of late:

Rear main seal replaced at 115k
New brakes all around at 124k
New tailpipe at 131k
Fuel pump replaced at 137k

The car currently has 141k miles on it as of a week ago. It's in okay condition but I'm saying that because my friend doesn't exactly baby it- the paint is starting to fade a bit and the front seats are showing heavy wear on them, typical of 850s whose leather isn't taken regularly taken care of. At this point in the car's life (build date 6/96) is the turbocharger good for another few miles or should it be replaced right now? Taking into account the repairs that have been done on this car and its condition, I'm inclined to offer her between $3500 and $4000 for it. She wants $5k. What do you guys here think?

the 140,000 mile maintenance bill will be about $1,300 - for timing belt, tensioner, and the misc. things they find that are busted. As others have said, the air conditioner may have issues - total cost upto $3,000. Be sure to check out the Air before u buy. On the other hand, she has already fixed the other main items that you would have to fix. If everything is in good mechanical shape and you keep in mind the cost of the timing belt change(a must), then $4,000 to $4500 is ok. good luck with your new "brick"

This does not seeem like someone who maintains a car very well. Do they have receipts for the oil changes/air filters? "About 4000 miles" could be something like 5 or 6 thousand. How about timing belt changes? It should have been done at 70 k miles and if so it is due again real soon. AC evap replacement is a $1200+ dealer repair and common for 850's but I believe the '97 should have a cabin intake air filter which would make this less of an issue. Check to see if it's still there and maintained properly. Should be replaced every 6 mos or when dirty. Your price is more realistic. I think the owner is trying to get back some of the previous repair costs.

    Juan,
This car will need a timing belt and tensioner - now.

The turbo will last quite a while, if you use thin engine oil and change it every 3-5K. Longer with synthetic. Check the color of the tranny fluid, brown is probably OK, but black means don't buy it.

Every Volvo with leather seats will experience cracking, regardless of the amount of conditioner you use. Parking, day and night, in a garage helps. Hot interior is death. Too bad people don't buy cloth seats any more, they last longer than leather, don't get sticky when you wear shorts, and breath nicely. Cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, too.

Split the difference with her. She is your friend, right? $500 is not enough to make her mad at you...

    Klaus

Klaus- She said she changed the timing belt and tensioner at 137k miles, I just found that out when I spoke with her an hour ago.

Then it will be easier for you to give up $500. Good luck!~

The condition of the turbo is directly related to the number of oil changes. If regularly maintained, it should be fine. Given the apparently rough physical condition, your numbers sound more realistic than hers. What does Edmund or Kelly BlueBook sez?

      Mr. Norm,

When consulting Kelley Blue Book "good" condition is $4600, and "excellent" is about $5300. They are both private party values, by the way.

Per oil changes, she told me she changes her oil about every 4,000 miles, which I think is overextending it a bit.

The 4000-4500 range sounds like a fair deal. It is good that some of those things (especially the RMS) were taken care of. My car (95 turbo) had 141K when I bought it a year and a half ago, and I paid $3850 for it. It was well maintained, has window tinting which has kept the interior in great shape. It was the dead of winter, and I think other shoppers weren't thinking of cars. I had have plenty of routine items all the same: brakes, axles, tires, etc. I do a lot of my own work, or the bills would have been quite a bit higher. Look for anything that looks like it needs immediate replacement, and (maybe) deduct that from the $4500 (it sounds like GOOD describes the car from what you wrote). The 5k sounds high.
