850 Fault Codes 101 - Can Anyone Help Me Interpret These Codes? 850 1995

Everyone, I should start off by thanking anyone who replies to this post. You are always very generous to help me out with my Volvo problems and I truly appreciate it. Now on to the problems:

1995 Volvo 850 Sedan, 142k Naturally Aspirated

I've got some minor transmission shifting issues, to me (and hardly anyone else) it seems to shift rough at times. The transmission guy of course said it's going out, but my gut feeling says it's being caused by something else. My mechanic says that is very possible.

Codes: First of all, I just checked my codes again tonight in Socket #2 and only got code "241" which is apparently EGR Malfunction or Flow Fault. The mechanic told me the EGR sensor needs replacement which I believe is true - it's obviously got fuel issues. My question is - can this be affecting the transmission in ANY way shape or form causing the shifts to feel just a hair off?

Second question pertains again to codes. Just out of curiosity I plugged the code sensor probe into the other sockets and pressed the button. When I plugged it into Socket #3 I got three codes back. 312, 213, and 214. I was NOT told nor have I read anywhere that I should check my codes in these other sockets - my question is should I? Do these codes mean anything? You would know better than I would. All three of these codes pertain to Knock fuel sensor, Throttle switch signal and Ignition RPM sensor. They're all kind of fuel related and I'm curious if they are real or erroneous because I plugged into Socket 3.

Sorry for the long questions but I can't describe it any other way.

Thank you again, VERY much and I anxiously await your responces.

My car is the same model, age, and mileage. I have no stored codes. It seems like on certain days the gearbox will shift rougher than on others. This has been so for years and gotten no worse. No relation I can find to driving conditions, cold/warm trans, etc. Assuming the trans has had normal use and car with occasional fluid changing, I wouldn't worry unless the frequency is often and increasing or the fluid is burnt or discolored.

That being said, was your PNP switch replaced in the past? Before replacing mine I had intermittent erratic operation of the gearbox. It was very evident, not slight. The CEL came on a few times then became persistent. Worst in cold weather as many have reported.

If you are getting several unrelated codes there is also the possibility of a bad ground connection or poor voltage regulation on the car - do all the accessories, gauges, radio, etc work ok?

First of all, Volvo gave you two diagnostic boxes with lots of sockets. If they weren't important, they would not have bothered.
A1 is for the tranny, A2 is for the fuel system, A3 is for the ABS, A5 is for the TCU, A6 is for the ignition system, and A7 is for the instrument panel.
B1 is climate control, B2 is cruise control (code 122 is normal), and B5 is for SRS.
The ABS codes are for missing signal in the left and right rear sensor at start of movement, the 312 is for right front sensor short. These can be due to dirt and need to be erased and checked after a short trip to see if they come back. All three can be stored and the computer might not turn on the ABS light until it happens multiple times.
The A2 - 241 could be the result of a vacuum leak under the battery shelf. Check out the elbow and the vacuum lines before you throw a lot of money at your mechanic.

I had 412, an evaporator code. It was a fuel system problem too, but my transmission felt "off" a bit, especially between 2nd and 3rd..kind of a jolting shift.

I had the evaporator and hose replaced, and the shifting sensation stopped.

    It's a bit mysterious!
