Does anyone know if Ford or Mazda are using any volvo engines in their cars?

The engine in the European Ford Focus XR5 Turbo is called the '2.5L Duratec 20 valve 5-cylinder turbo engine'

...it says "Ford" right on the cam cover so it can't be a Volvo, can it?

http://www.ford.com.au/range/focus/models/xr5turbo.asp

So it's no more a Volvo motor than it's a Saturn motor in the Saab. (Try posting over at the Saab board about the 9-3's Saturn motor and watch the response!)

In the US, the Ford Focus is an entirely different vehicle than what is sold in most other countries. So at least in the US we get bucket-of-bolts engines... I cant speak for the Ford Focus outside the US...

But for Ford engines in Volvos....

Check out the geneology of the XC90's Yamaha V8...

"..created the trim, 3.4-liter V-8 in the second-generation Ford Taurus SHO. Although very similar, the XC90's 60-degree V-8 shares no parts with the SHO engine..."

Yeah, and the new V8 (or was it a V6?) '07 S80 has a Ford drive train.....from what I heard at the dealer today. They were embarrassed and ashamed that the alternator is under the intake manifold. Yikes!

It's an I6 (not V6), but soon it'll have an optional V8 (same one as in the XC90) N.M.I.

Searching the web... I have to agree with Ken C on both counts. The V8 is the same Yamaha unit from the XC90. The 6 cylinder engine will be an in-line unit (I'm guessing it's based on Volvo's current engine architecture, perhaps a revised version of the I6 that was used in S80's a few years ago).

I guess it depends on the degree of 'revised' ....

Hi, again.
The I6 that will be standard in the S80 is being "advertised" (i.e., in the publicity releases, which I've been following) as "all new". But how revised or how new? I guess it depends on your point of view -- I certainly can't comment.
In either case, it is clear that Volvo is trying hard to "divorce" this new engine from any ill feelings about the former S80's engine.

Ford and Mazda are not using Volvo engines. This is why we pay a premium for a Volvo. That and Volvo's safety components are also not shared on the Ford and Mazdas.

Engines, no...but safety equipt., although not direct fits, are being used on both...Volvo invented the 3 point seat belt for instance, and the curtain airbags as well as chasis with stronger steal and break-away points.

Yes... all cars have engines, but not all cars have Volvo engines. Yes all cars have 3-point seat belts, but not all cars have Volvo's seatbelts (pretensioners, self adjusting height etc etc etc that go along with it)... The Ford and Mazda are sharing basic architecture with the Volvo, but that is about it. Ford and Mazda might have curtain airbags, but I seriously doubt they are the same actual unit. If you ever have a chance to compare airbags components (between cheap and expensive cars) I think you would be surprised at what's inside! And they have to design the component into the vehicle such that it is effective and deploys at the right time etc, not only so it protects passengers, but also so it is not the cause of injury.

That's why I said "not direct" fits... I'm in total agreement with you.

The original Ford Taurus SHO used a high performance Yamaha 3 litre V6. The 1996 and up SHO used a Yamaha V8. As far as I know, this engine is the predecessor of the XC90/new S80 V8.

The Mazda3 and the European Focus are built from the same platform as the S40/V50. (Check wheelbases, widths, etc.) However, to my knowledge the Volvo 5 cylinder has never been used in another manufacturer's cars. The 5 cylinder is a modular design originally done by Porsche's engineering consultancy with both 4 cylinder (old S/V40) and 6 cylinder (960 and S80) variants). At least, these are the facts as I know them. If I'm wrong on some point, please correct me.

The XC90/S80 V8 are similar to the SHO V8, but none of the same parts... I suppose Ford may opt to use this new V8 in other places, we shall see...

Indeed Ford/Mazda/Volvo collaborated on developing the new shared platform for the Mazda3/EuroFocus/S40-V50. Everything else, though, engines, safety systems, etc are entirely different between the Mazda3/EuroFocus/S40-V50.

Volvo did get lots of engineering support from Porsche in developing their line of in-line 4/5/6 cylinder modular engines. The 5-cylinder engine first appearing in the 1993 850.
