Anyone know of a OBD-II code reader at a decent price and features?.... S60

For my daughter's new '07 S60, I'd like to be able to help her when (inevitably) she finds a problem. Are there any decent (price, features) OBD-II code readers on the market. I'm not familiar with them myself, still being in the 240 era.
Would appreciate any recommendations.

AS stated here you'll be hard pressed to read any codes for your Volvo beyond engine, transmission and emission codes. Still, these are the main ones you should be concerned with in regards to safety and pricey repairs. The other stuff, like the seat electronics, the climate control, etc. (except SRS- airbags) is something really left to the dealer. To scan the codes and diagnose them for the engine/tranny/emissions (those that may keep your car from starting or may leave you stranded) I suggest buying a Code reader from Equus Innova that will read OBD-II and CAN since newer Volvo's have CAN-bus. A good example of these can be found here (for a decent price too!):

As mentioned, Alex Peper's software if you have a PC is another option. OBD-2.com Does quite a lot although some of the icons and programs are a little strange especially for a computer idiot like me.

I just *returned* Alex Peper's OBDII system (www.obd-2.com) because it wouldn't read the body and chassis codes on my S70. I already had a generic code reader -- an Equus 3100 -- that could read my powertrain and emissions codes, but needed something to read airbag (SRS) codes. In spite of Alex's claims, and quite a few go-rounds with tech support, we could never get it to work. In my case, I'm stuck going back to the world's worst service department. :(

The S60 uses a newer system for extended diagnostics codes than my S70 does, so this might still be an option for some.

The best one is from England's Volvo club, it loads onto a lap top. Not cheap, but it will read Volvo specific codes. All of the other hand held models just do generic codes for Ford, etc. and will only do the engine and tranny codes, not ECC, instrument cluster, power seats, etc. And then you will need to translate the P0 and P1 codes to a 5 cylinder engine.

My understanding is that Vol-FCR could interrogate all control modules, but that it was limited to '96 and '97 850s, and the 1998 70-series cars. I'll have to try that with the demo tomorrow when the wife gets back with the S60.

I know it didn't work on my former '95 850, even though that had an OBD-II port.

I have a VAG-COM, necessitated by the Beetle, but they claim the interface to work with Vol-FCR.

Aside from using the Volvo VCT-2000 tool to interrogate all the functionality of the central electronics module, I'm not sure what options there are in this realm. I doubt there's something out there for Volvo that supports the newer models like there is for VW/Audi. VAG-COM software now offers an OBD-II "generic" mode that works with all European cars that use the "ISO" protocol. This would work for investigating Check Engine lights for the EPA-required codes. As far as addressing other messages that pop up, I'm not sure if that means a trip to the dealer is in order or not.

Maybe Alex Peper's OBD-II solutions would be a cheaper option for generic OBD-II functionality?

      Nate

Vol-FCR didn't work with the S60. The screen shot that came up when I launched the application shows its compatibility.

I did confirm that the generic OBD-II functionality of Vag-Com did work with the Volvo, but it would not recognize the other modules.
