Replacement key/fob alternatives S70

Just went to the dealer to replace a key and fob for my 1999 S70. They wanted $90 for the key and $150 for the fob and said that programming both so they'll actually work will run another $40 a piece plus labor. So, my question is this, are there any viable alternatives to the dealer for these items? Is it actually necessary to "program" the key and the fob? Any and all ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Martin

Go to: www.keylessride.com/

Specifically page: www.keylessride.com/order/chooseremote.asp?make=Volvo&remoteyear=1999&model=S70 and choose if you have the panic alarm or not.

Fob cost is $59.00. You still HAVE to have Volvo do the programming. $40 is ok.

Have not had any fob's purchased, but keys made, yes. Locally It cost me $35 which is high enough, but they need a special machine to do it. Check with some other dealers as you are having the corn cob and turpentine treatement applied.

Replacement key/fob alternatives - few or none S70

Wow, that price is terrible. Klaus is right, you have to get the new fob programmed. All I can suggest is try another dealer, or if you have a decent relationship with the parts manager, see if he'll order the key and fob for a lower price. Do you have a pretty wife? Send her to the parts counter. A couple of years ago, the dealer in Jackson, MS, quoted a fob for about $90 complete (with programming).

Don't you just love the dealer when they tell you that? They are not lying about needing to program the key and fob, and $40 is reasonable. But try calling Volvo's 800 number (it's in your owner's manual) and ask them if that is a reasonable price for the key and fob.
Some people get fobs on ebay, and the dealer will refuse to program them! They got us over a barrel, and all we can do is complain to Volvo headquarters. The more emails they get, the better!
