Value of my S70??? S70 1998

Hey gang,

Sadly enough, the time has come to sell the S70. It's been an amazing car, but I need to get something bigger that I can tow our boat with and haul the dogs. I figured I would post here to see what similar models have recently been purchased for or sold for.

The car is in good shape...not great...not crappy. It still turns head and my local dealer loves it when I bring it in (everybody wants to drive it). It pulls as strong as ever and competes wonderfully with a lot of modern cars. I ran with an EVO the other night and didn't get embarassed.

Over the course of owning it, I've done a lot of work on it.

1998 S70 T-5 M
-SuperSprint SS exhaust
-K&N drop in
-iPd ECU
-iPd Anti-sway bars
-Shock tower brace
-New Bilsteins (4,000 miles)
-Bazooka
-Hella lamps
-European side marker lamps
-Limo tint
-Epoxy coated calipers
-New Sumo's (5,000 miles)
-Thule rack (thrown in with it)
-Grey floor mats (instead of the beige - they don't show dirt and they give it a nice two-tone look)
-Wood dash kit (looks great)
-Full Corbin Bra
-Blacked out grill
-ABS Module rebuilt (thanks to a resource from here)
-I had Magnecores but pulled them

Adds up to quite a bit....but it all works great and fits well with the car.

Now, there are a few things that need to be pointed out:

-Minor dimple on passenger side (dent wizard would pull it no prob)
-Rear wing is showing it's age (oxidized paint). Not bad, but I'm picky as hell.
-Front hood has bird poop damage (into the paint)
-Front hood has nasty scractch just above the grill (covered by bra though)
-right rear seat looks like it has water stain. Not bad, but I don't like it.
-Wheels are starting to show their age...no big curbings, but the finish is aging
-S70 door bubble issue

Other than that, it looks great. The leather is in better shape than our '02 SL500...it wears great.

Here are links to pics I took last weekend. I'll get some inside ones soon:

If anyone is interested, has an idea of what I should ask, or has any suggestions as to anywhere that someone would be interested in this car (it took me six months to hunt one down back in '98), PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

Thanks all!

-John

The guys are right that you should get rid off mods. I would never consider buying a Volvo with mods because it sends the message that the car was probably abused. Most people who look for Volvos are not into mods.

PS - It has 99,800 miles.

Blue Book (NADA) shows $7-10K retail without all of the mods. How realistic is it that I get $10,000 with all of the work? Are there still people out there that hunt these cars down like I did in '98? It would have to be someone who knows what this car is capable and is looking for it I suppose.

not very realistic to get 10K.

Don't know where you are, but I think you would be lucky to get 7K...and that may take a while to find the buyer.

I scoured the country for a few T5 speed manual and found them. But, in my opinion, a lot of stuff you did to the car are negatives or add no value to buyers...at least me. I don't want a car that's chipped...take the chip out and sell it....the wing...the first thing I do is remove it and sell it, the hellas....so annoying to oncoming traffic that I'd take them off rather than get shot or the "finger". Actually....a lot of fog lighters out there should be ticketed for the aim of their lights.

The car may be worth keeping if this is the way you like it. When you go to trade it, I predict $5 to $7 thousand.

The wing is the factory wing. Who would remove that?

The driving lamps are hella f200's...the first set I had came off of my original '77 Benz...I got addicted to hella's then and there's a reason for it: if properly aligned and aimed, they make driving substantially safer. At 60 mph, your factory lamps do not provide ample lighting area for you to react in time. These are not "rice-burner" lamps.

And the iPd ECU provides an extremely reliable fuel map.

          My $.02.

We'll see how much I sell it for at auction. It's one amazing car that shouldn't be traded or changed. I spent 6 months finding this vehicle, odds are, there's someone out there who has spent 5-6 months and may just come across mine.

I agree...pull the mods off and sell them separately on volvospeed.com message board and sell the car as close to stock as you can. This way you'll get more for your money and will be most likely to sell it unless you find an enthusiast who really digs your mods, and that is actually pretty rare.

            'Price' versus 'Value' S70 1998

I tried the kbb calculator on mine and got a trade in value of $3200 (good condition).

Then, I knocked 100,000 miles off it and it and it still only came up as $5900.

            And it's a wagon.

(Also, it's not for sale. Where else could I find a "winter beater" like mine for only $3200???)

I agree that usually the best course is to remove the mods and sell them separately. But you might try listing the car over at the classifieds at Swedespeed or Volvospeed first before ripping all the mods off the car. The T5 manuals are fairly rare and there is usually someone looking for one.

              Interesting.

It's not what I think the car is worth ("value" wise), but it was above my reserve.

Very cool! So there was an enthusiast or two out there and you got a good price for your car. Congratulations are in order!
