Low Brake Pedal 2003 XC70 35k miles V70-XC70 2003

Hi Folks,
I am buying a 2003 XC70 that has a low pedal (brake). The brakes work fine when you get the pedal near the floor. Does it just need new pads? I had a 2001 XC70 and it had a "normal" brake pedal.
thanks for your help.
Jerry

    Update

I bled the brakes per spec, put on new pads all the way around, put in a new master cylinder (Dealer $344.00 plus $20- core, local import house $275, on-line $202.00, no core), bled the brakes again and still the pedal is not as good as my 240 brake pedal. Do I have to bleed the ABS box? Do I need anything special for that job?

Are you using a power bleeder? I have read a number of times that the ABS systems can't be fully bled by the old fashioned methods like pumping the brake pedal.

You most likely have air in the new master cylinder. Usually the new master cylinder will come with plastic bleed tubes. You attach the plastic tubes to the outlet of the master cylinder and the other end back to the fill opening of the master cylinder. Place the master cylinder in a vise of some sort and keep pressing on the plunger until you no longer see bubbles. Thereafter, you remove the plastic tubes and install the unit and all the brake lines onto the master cylinder. You start bleeding from the caliper farthest to the master cylinder and work closer to the unit. On your first cylinder after you see the last bubble, pump another 10 times to make sure no air bubbles are coming out. If you are doing this the old fashion way, push and close, it could take a long time; be patient. It is not unusual to use up to 32 oz, maybe more, to finish the job. You can also buy a power bleeder for about $60 to make the job easier. It will pay for itself you other cars to do.

Brake pads are only a few millimeters thick, so the brake peddle should not feel much different with new pads verses totally worn out pads.
This problem may be due to a bad master cylinder and you are only using half of the brake lines. Do not buy a car with safety defects.

Check the brake fluid reservoir...might just be low. This happens when brakes become thinner.

    Hi,
Sounds like there is air in the brake lines somewhere, have they been bled recently? Maybe a faulty MC?
    Good luck!

Can I bleed the ABS like the old 240's with NON ABS?
Or do I need a special scan tool for cycling modulator valves?
