1997 850 GLT Blower Motor - Should I Try Replacing Myself? 850

I have a blower motor that has all but seized up - makes a terrible low pitch growling sound with any fan volume - shakes the whole dash. I'm pretty sure it's the blower motor as the symptoms stop as soon as I manually turn off the fan. I've been poring through this site looking for clues on how tough a job this for a DIY. I can find a blower motor/fan unit for a good price online. I am reasonably mechanical - the extent of my repair efforts include replacing the ABS module, but I don't know how difficult/time consuming the blower motor replacement job is on my 850.

Would appreciate any wise counsel including repair tips. Do I need to worry about the passenger side air bags for example? Bids for a mechanic repair are ranging from $350 - $500. I figure if I can do the whole job in less than 2 hours plus part cost I will be money way ahead.

Thanks in advance...

There are great instructions on Bay 13, under "850 Passenger Dash Access":

It's very much a DIY job, and should take about an hour. The greatest difficulty I had was wiggling the knee bolster out - it kept slipping back onto the studs. And like some else already said, be careful with the glove box hinges.

    Have fun, good luck.

I just did this myself. Still need to put it all back together. See my previous posts this month as well as the one on SRS light on. It's not that hard just VERRRY time consuming. That's why the shop charge so much money. Be careful where you buy the blower motor. Some places on line will sell you just the motor and not the cage that goes with it. Best place I found is ebay. There is one constantly on there for $139+ship. Then if you look hard enough I think there is another one used for apx $50-$60.

I don't know what the Haynes manual says I looked at the online database with my local library for instructions. I will take more tools than you think. Make sure you have 1/4" drive with mostly metric and might need a couple standard sockets. You will need a torx drive and one as a socket size to get to the one in the upper right hand of the motor. The hardest part of the whole job is safely removing the glove box door brackets without breaking them. Use the smallest MICRO flat screwdriver you can find--jewlers size--to push on the tab that you can't even see to pull the glove box door brackets free.

After you remove the knee bolster (very simple--get your head underneath the dash to find the nuts--will need deep sockets metric & 1/4" drive) you may find it useful as I did to loosen the bracket on the right hand side. It is not necessary to remove it entirely but I found it very difficult to get the blower motor out without loosening it. Take your time--I couldn't get a wrench around the nuts holding it in to turn more than a teeny, tiny bit at a time. Exasperating.

You'll need to remove two electrical slide-ons from the moter housing and work around a mass of wires, but the only thing you should have to unplug is the motor itself.

Last thing. It is not necessary to disconnect the battery, however: DO NOT PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION OR TURN THE IGNITION ON AT ALL WHILE ANYTHING IS UNPLUGGED. I did this unintentionally and caused myself a lot of problems with the SRS light--see my other post.

I hope for the best and God Bless!

It's an easy repair. Should be self explanatory once you take off the knee bolster on the passenger's side. If you're worried about the airbag light going on, disconnect the battery for at least 15 minutes before you begin the r&r. Make sure you have your radio code.

It looks easy in the Haynes manual. Remove the panel below the glove box and the glove box itself, and it comes straight out.
