'97 850 GLT Electric Fan 850 1997

I am suspicious of the cooling systems electric fan. I have not heard it kick on for awhile. It's my wifes car but I normally hear the electric fan run after she gets home when I'm out with the kids and I heven't heard it run in awhile. I would like to test the coolant temp sensor, fan relay and electric fan to see what's up. Any decent test procedures? I don't want to replace parts for no reason.
Thanks

Mike,
Try your local library. Go online there and see if they subscribe to ALLDATA. That source has all of the wiring diagrams and sensor resistances for every year of Volvo.
They might charge you $.10 for a page print, but that is cheap.

I say go low tech on it, with the car shut off reach in and see if you can spin the fan freely or if it is seized. I have had relays go bad, sensors go bad and fans seize up. Typically if the sensor goes bad ECU will catch it, log a code, and run the fan at 1/2 speed anytime the car is running. I have had the occassional relay take a dump and they are dip-shit simple to diagnose, with the key in the on position pull the relay out of the spot that it goes into right above the right corner of the radiator and take a look at it. It will have one big fat lead going in, batt + feed, a small two pole connector in the middle, control leads from the ECU to close the relay and give you fan speeds one or two, and lastly a two pole connector with two fat leads in it that go to the fan. Unplug the small connector in the middle and ground the leads one at a time, it should cause the fan to come on 1/2 speed and then full speed. It is really pretty simple.
