High Engine Temperature Message in heavy stop/go traffic (I-5) V70-XC70 2001

No other message or engine warning comes on - and the temp goes back to normal when you start moving at a decent rate. Also notice it helps a little if you turn off the AC.

Definitely don;t want to ruin my motor - but I would think if it was really bad the "check engine" or go to the dealer message would come on.

Any hints? I can tell that the fan is working (but can't tell if optimally).

Thanks, Tom

In addition to poor air flow thru radiator due to obstruction outside or improper fan operation you may have poor circulation of coolant or an internally obstructed radiator or thermostat may be opening partially.

You will not get a check engine light. Overheating can become serious quickly on modern light alloy engines and I would check out the cause thoroughly. I wouldn't rely on computer generated messages for protection.

    Are you losing any coolant?

Thanks, thermostat another good idea. No obstructions on the outside - but when i get my service appointment I will get the fluid changed and see of they can flush or check for any internal obstruction. As well as check the two speed fan. Roger on not relying on the warning lights. Thanks, Tom

At what outside temperature are you getting the temperature warning? Another possibility: try cleaning the radiator fins if they have lots of bugs smashed in them. And, definitely make sure there is no paper or plastic stuck in front of the radiator. Also, you've changed the coolant every two years, haven't you?

Thanks for the reply. I am in Seattle so it isn;t really that hot (low 80s at the most). The radiator fins seem OK other than dents from rocks. Don't think I have ever changed the radiotor fluid in 6 yrs. Have gotten mixed answers from the dealers back when I was getting service from Volvo service. I plan to get this done as well as soon as I can score an appointment. Thanks, Tom

Definitely change fluid as a first part of the diagnosis V70-XC70 2001

Use the stock Volvo coolant and distilled water. Remember, the coolant is not only for heat transfer but also has anti-corrosion additives. And by changing it regularly, you clean out contaminants and sludge (if any). Well-worthwhile and cheap maintenance. My mechanic here in town curses cars where the coolant has never been changed because he often has to replace the entire radiator and other parts because they are so gunked up.

That is a 2 speed fan and it sounds like the high speed isn't kicking in. Plus, check the fluid level if you already havent done so. Any plastic stuck infront of the condensor, like shopping bag? Look at the scoop under the bumper.

Thanks, I did not actually check the fluid level but should. All of my Volvos over the years seem to activate a warning light if the fluid level even went down a cup. I know these indicator switches can fail and I shouldn't trus my engine to them. Also, no obstruction of air flow though some of the radiator coils seem dented from years of rocks/ sticks. The fan not working properly seems like a good idea. I am trying to get an appt. at a dealer for a check up. Thanks, Tom
