Timing belt torque specs -850

1994 855 NA - 161K

What's the torque supposed to be on the
timing belt idler pulley? If I tighten the
T-45 bolt too tight the pulley can't move,
what's to keep the bolt from backing out
if it's too loose?

Thanks,

sounds like a defective or very dirty part. I tightened mine good and hard and the roller still swung easily.

Are you entirely sure that you have the tensioner pulley in there correctly? If you let it sit too low it will bind on the plastic backing plate, you need to make sure that it is sitting up high enough that this will not be an issue. Once installed properly you should be able to tighten that bolt down just about as tight as you want. The depth of the torx fitting in the actual bolt is fairly shallow and will not allow you to get a great deal of torque on it without stripping it out. I was doing one just yesterday and it never ceases to amaze me how stupid that design is. To answer your question though, Vadis calls it out at 30 NM or 23 Ft lbs.

The pulley is off the plastic and in front of
one of the water pump bolts - The pulley
will move if you push it up or down, I was
trying to figure out how easily it should
move - it was pretty hard to move when
I took the belt off and yes it is a stupid
design, it was very difficult to get that
T-45 in there I ended up using an impact
Torx bit and turning the bit with an
open-end wrench, then I switched over
to 1/4" drive - 3/8 would not fit.

      Thanks
