Code P0440--Gross leak in evaporative loss system V70-XC70

Hello all,

I have a 98 v70 n/a with about 100k on the clock. for the last several months, each time i fill up the tank with gas and then drive for about 100 miles or so the CE light comes on; i have a code reader and it is always p0440. I replaced the fuel cap with new assuming it was a hard seal. Still does it. the vacuum hoses and trap etc. were all cleaned and replaced as necessary about 6 mo ago in conjunction with a RMS replacement.

Any ideas?

Mike, Check the line going from your charcoal cannister to your EVAP valve. There should be a small white filter on the line right before it goes into the valve. The problem is, not all 1998's came with this filter installed from the factory. If you do have it, you probably should replace it. If you dont, go get one and retrofit it onto the line. Then take some carb cleaner and clean out both ports on the evap valve. Hook everything back up, clear your codes, & hopefully youll be good for a while.

thanks, boobaka.

Ok, I admit I am a little lazy and the engine bay on the v70 is pretty full. Can you tell me where the EVAP valve is on this engine (for that matter I haven't see the charcoal canister in casual abservence either.

Thanks,
Mike

OK, lazy. The cannister is under the driver's side fender, under the battery, and can be seen from underneath the bumper. The filter is in the vacuum line under the air intake duct directly behind the radiator. Check the line for cracks, also, and make sure it is plugged into the cannister.

thanks for the replies and info.

I checked all the connections to the canister then dissasembled the valve, hoses and filter. I blew out the filter with compressed air [some black soot came out but not a lot and I doubt it would have been enough to impede the vacuum. I reassembled and will see what happens. I'd like to check the pipe all the way back to the tank but it is just too hot to spend that much time under the car for a "minor" issue like this.
