quick fix for 855 tailgate rattle? 850

Hi,
My (dad's) 855 Turbo's rear gate rattles like crazy. Is there a quick solution to stop this? We're leaving on a trip on Saturday and wanted to do some sort of fix beforehand.
Thanks

quick fix for 855 tailgate rattle? 850 1997

    Hi,

I have an 850R wagon. I have a horrible rattle and am looking for advice - but I don't know if it's the same problem or fix described in the other posts in this thread.

My car has been repaired, and the plastic / carpet covered panels that cover the electrics in the door keep coming loose. They are held in by those little black plastic plugs that you can't reuse - they expand on fitting but break if they are taken out. Hope this makes sense, do you notice that I'm not very technical? ;)

Anyway, the panelbeaters have replaced the plugs twice now, and the panels just keep coming loose and driving me crazy. Is there anything that can be used instead of these plugs? Maybe the R's harder suspension is just too much for them.

    Thanks!
    Michelle

My dealer fixed mine about a year or more ago (96 850 wgn). Told at the time there was a new kit to fix this problem. It's worked ever since.

Hi, me again - just wanted to follow up on this. I went past Volvo on Saturday and they were incredibly helpful - they said it's often a problem, and what they recommend is drilling two little holes in the carpeted section and putting in a couple of screws to hold it all. Which they ended up doing for me, and not even charging me :) They also discovered that the reason the plugs weren't working was because the panelbeaters had broken the part that the plugs go into when they removed the panels - and then tried to GLUE the plug in. *sigh*

If it is indeed the top plastic that rattles, then MIJ's solution is correct. If that has already been done, you can adjust the U bolt on the bumper. Before adjusting it, stick a single layer of towel over the back so the gate closes on it. If that stops the rattle, then lift up the spare tire cover and you will see 2 #40 torx screws. loosen them - don't take them out! - and move the striker plate forward about 1/16th of an inch. If you move it more than 1/4 inch forward, you will breake the plastic in the latch mechanism and the latch needs to be replaced with a new one. Ask me how I know that!

Others sell other similar kits for this repair. You might be able to cut some thin sheet metal pieces to match and find similar fasteners at an autoparts store. Screws you can find anywhere. But maybe the above will give you an idea. We actually bought this kit and used it successfully with our old 850 wagon that has the rear gate rattle.
