Any suggestion on CD Changers ? V70-XC70

Just talked to the local dealer about the Volvo 10-disc CD changer. Costs $662 for the changer and including mounting hardware and everything $910. This is parts alone. Are there any other less costly options ? i.e Could I buy a factory stereo compatible CD changer and install it myself ? How easy would it be ? I inquired about the iPod adapter too at the dealer and that came to $200 parts(without iPod :) ). That seems more reasonable if DIYing. Any suggestions ?

Thanks
Naveen

Okay brickboard users dont seem to have any info on this neither does swedespeed. However swedespeed had a killer thread which dealt with all these cd-changer/ipod adapter issues which I though would be interesting to users of this site. here are the links

The guy has actually reverse-engineered the protocol between the HU and other compatible units and created an emulator for it through which one could actually connect an ipod, a cd-changer, an md-changer and nav all at the same time. Much superior to the stock volvo ipod adapter!!!

    Cheers

    Naveen,
Alpine CD changers are compatible with your Volvo radio unit.
What you'll need is a "VolAlp" adapter. (Alpine actually makes the
Volvo units, but Volvo requested that Alpine reverse the pin order so that
Alpine units are not just plug & play - Go figure!)
Anyhow, a VolAlp is @ $15.00 new, and you can get an Alpine CD shuttle
for @$75.00 to $200.00 on eBay. It takes about 1.5 hours to install.
I did this about a year and a half ago and my total expense was under
    $200.00 Canadian.

I did some searching on the net and found that the pre 2001 cars have alpine head units whereas the 2001 and later ones have mitsubishi units. So the VOLALP adapter wont help here!!! Thanks for the info anyway.

      Thanks

    Naveen,

I have an idea for the IPOD part of your question. Check out www.belkin.com, they have a unit that fits into your 12V adapter. There are some pros and cons for this unit; I will try to list some.

    Pros:

    1) Cost; I found it for around $80 on the net
    2) You can install the unit yourself.
    3) IPOD quality, selection
    4) IPOD quality, selection
    5) IPOD quality, selection
    6) No I am not stuttering….

    Cons:

    1) You have to be patient and read the instructions.
    2) The Belkin requires a ‘dead’ FM radio channel, here in the northeast; almost all FM channels are being used. ( see con #1)
    3) You really have to know what you want to listen to before you start driving, because you will not be focused on the road if you start changing tunes.

All in all, I am very happy with the Belkin and recommend using it.
