new O2 sensors for better gas mileage? V70-XC70 1998

The sensor manufacturers say that if you replace your "worn out" O2 sensors, you can increase your gas mileage by X %

Have any of you replaced your O2 sensors as preventive maintenance resulting in better gas mileage?

Read up on technical info on oxygen sensors and how they work. Bosch website has good info. The heated ones can become sluggish when dirty, but otherwise they either work properly or don't work at all. The sensor is part of a feedback control system that regulates the mixture. Like other feedback systems they keep pretty close tolerances (in this case mandated by federal government). When the oxygen sensor fails completely and produces no signal at all or an extreme value unrelated to oxygen, then the gas mileage and emissions will go very bad and you will get your 'check engine' light. It makes no sense to prematurely replace one.

Volvo says change at 100K but they can go much longer. I ran a Ford Windstar (I hate to admit it but we needed it for a wheelchair lift) with the origionals for 170K w/o a sign of a problem. Ran fine and fuel milage never varied. They tend to fail slowly anyway

True, they do last longer. I took a front 02 sensor into my indy for him to change it out. My car now has 122K miles on it. He told me that he checked the voltage resistance and that my 02 sensor was acting as if it were brand new and there was no reason to change it...that he would change it once I got a code for it. He also told me that the one in there looked brand new. I bought this car a bit over 30K miles ago...don't know if the previous owner changed it out or not. Anyway, my 2cents is to change it if it's needed and not before.

At $170 each, that is a lot of gas. Plus a good wrench and time to do it right. It is probably better to check the O2 sensor for the correct resistance than to arbitrarily replacing it.
