Turning off Service Light V70-XC70

Hi,

I've got that damn service light coming on for about 2mins at every start up. In understand it's indicating an oil change- my local (non-volvo) garage can't turn it off. Is this somehting that needs a Volvo tool or is there a trick to it???

Thanks Mike

When I went to Victor Rocha's house to have him replace my abs module in my 98', he reset everything with the proper OBD code reader which plugs into the center console arm rest, you can read and reset all codes with this unit. My service light is also back on, Im considering buying an OBD reader.

99% of code readers won't reset the service light...read the other posts here for procedure for different years and what I had to say about '98's (actually '96 and '97 apply too). 99's and '01's with a push of dash buttons as well as newer '01' and newer.

A common fix for many DIY's is to just pull the bulb. Suposedly this takes an hour or less to access and complete. The light does no other function than to remind you of passing a 5,000 mile mark since last reset.

Removing bulb is fine but maybe be an issue when reselling car. V70-XC70

So I resorted to black tape method which took only 15 seconds to do.

Depends on the year. If you have a 1998, you need a special service light tool.

What about a 99? Is there a DIY fix, or do I need a tool? What about a scantool/decoder?

BTW, the special tool to turn off the service light on my 88 BMW is a paper clip!

yep it's a 98- is this a real obscure tool (volvo specific) or something a decent garage would have. The local GM shop that does my oil changes were unable to shut it off- I know it's GM, but they are at least a big enough garage to presumably have more than just wrenches and hammers!

My nearest Volvo dealer skipped town about a year ago and not sure how the Honda folks who took over are dealing with Volvo (I think they might have the warranty contract).

Black Electrical Tape will do!!!!!!! V70-XC70

I cut a small piece of Black Electrical Tape 3/4" square and put it there.
Make sure it only covers the service light and no other warning lights.

I have NOT missed ths goofy service light the last 6 yrs. I do not even notice the black tape is there the last 6 yrs.

The light goes out after 1-2 min of driving.

The Draper Reset tool for Volvo will work. I bought one from eBay about a year ago and am well pleased with it. If you don't find it on eBay, maybe you can order it from here:
