Hi all. My Volvo 855 auto has developed a rare case of cutting out in traffic when warmed up. The engine revs and idles OK in neutral or park, but when placed in drive (or reverse) it will begin to cough and splutter and sound like it's only running on just one or two cylinders and then cut out after about ten seconds. It is then hard to get it to fire again, and has to be cranked quied a bit before it does. Leaving it to cool for half an hour seems to cure the problem short term but it fails again once warmed up. Open road driving seems OK mabe because the airflow keeps whatever is failing cool. An eighty mile open road trip is OK but a two mile town crawl means disaster. Please help as I'm at my wits end.

    Hi again. One more thing I have noticed about this problem is that the little light on the sport/economy switch only flashes for an instant when the ignition is first switched on, but it will stay light when the engine is running. Do you think its the transmission ECU that's shot?

      The little light where the Sprot/Economy switch is, staying on while the car is running is normal.

        I know it should be on constantly while the car is running. It's when I turn on the ignition first, the light flashes for a split second and then goes out. When I start the car, it then comes back on and stays on. This phenomenon, combined with the fact that the engine runs and revs perfectly until it is put in drive, leads me to believe that the problem is "transmission electronics" related. I need to find out where? Thanks for the reply. Regards.

    Check all the vacuum lines. Check the air intake bellows for cracks/leaks. Reseat the MAS plug. Dirty air filter? Remove and clean the throttle body and flame trap.

    There are too many possibilities to give you a single remedy. Take your car to an Autozone or PepBoys and get the codes read for free. Write them all down before you have them erased.
    Possible problems are AMM, FPR, torque converter lockup, various vacuum leaks, and who knows what else.
