850 Turbo - '95 - Turbo Oil Leak? 850 1995

Hi All - I have an oil leak, and a mechanic recently told me that it was coming from the Turbo. He also said that the turbo unit is a closed system - meaning that I can't put additional oil in... and that the turbo would die for sure within a couple of months.

Is this true? Is there anything I can do about the leak? If the turbo dies while I am on a road trip - will I still be able to drive?

Any help is appreciated!

Adam

Your mechanic is either not a Volvo mechanic or has never taken a class on turbos and how they work. "Closed system"? Oil gets pumped in and drains out back to the engine. Not very closed in my book!
I suggest finding a new mechanic, or changing the turbo return seal yourself.

probably just the turbo oil return line gasket. It's an easy DIY fix and cheap too. http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/turborepairline.php

      Hi,
As Klaus said, it`s highly likely that it`s the return seal. Just did that job on my wife`s 95 850 wagon, no big deal.
      Go for it!!
PS. I endorse the "Find a new mechanic!" suggestion. Sounds like you were getting set up for an expensive "repair".
