S70 GLT stumbling? S70

I have a 99 S70 GLT, a coil pak was replaced at 40k but now at 55k miles i have an occasional stumbling on idle only at different temperatures. Its not consistent and its works great now.....any ideas from you guys out there?
No check engine light, other other things to tell me something is wrong. Plugs replace 10k miles ago. Oil has 1600 miles on it from 2 months ago. Mobil 1 synthetic.

A good bet it may be your Electronic Trottle Module. Search for posts (numerous) on ETM failures. The ETM failed on all three of the S/V70's I've had over the last 7 years. Symptoms include "stumbling" on idle.

The ETM is now covered under Volvo warranty for first 10 years or 200K miles- whichever comes first, so take it to the dealer.

I want to thank all of you for your replies.
I called Sanberg volvo and found there is a software upgrade for my car.
I thought they would replace the etm module? Any ideas what they do?
Is new software needed or a new etm device?

I will take the car in this friday and report back.

Software upgrade is needed either way. The new software is know to "make things better" and may keep you from needing a new ETM for awhile at least...so it's buying you and the dealer more time on the expensive replacement. Take it and see how she goes. If the ETM still fails in the allotted time, you still have a free replacement coming to you.

They replaced the ETMs on my first two 70's (a V70 and an S70). We traded the V70 in 1-1/2 years ago for a Honda Odyssey, and traded the S70 (yes we had both at once, the same color too) in on a 1999 S70 AWD just 2 months ago. I knew it had the original ETM and that it would fail. The New one through a code for the ETM, but they only did the upgrade. It runs great and without the ossilating idle. They said the ETM will probably go in a year or so.

Glad things are working out. I hate it that they're doing a band-aid fix, but at least you're running for awhile. I hope that when it finally does fail, it doesn't happen suddenly, and when you're in the middle of a busy intersection. These are the dangerous failures. Keep a level head and drive safely! :)

Me too! So, when this does fail how does it fail, u get some warning earlier? or nothing at all?

How long might this last, my car was bought new in 99?
I went to the dealer and they wanted to know if they should troubleshoot? But i said no because the problem would not repeat itself repeatedly and there was no error code from engine check light.

Did i do the right thing? they did the software upgrade...but in pausing i mentioned if someone got hurt we could go to court due to their flaw. And your right, this could be a serious problem.

How long will the software upgrade last? Good question. This "upgrade" hasn't been available for very long, but it should be longer than a year.
Before the ETM fails for good, it usually gives the driver warnings, just like you had: stumbling idle, unable to hold speed on the highway, etc. Just don't wait to let it get worse, because it will.
                  I sure am glad I bought a 98 and not a 99! I love the cable. Guess I'm just old fashioned :)
