back brakes 850

My car has been making a clicking sound from the reartires, i took it to my indy dealer which said that the back brake pads are rusted and that the rotors are scraping up against them. He said that I would need new pads and rotors, cost about 400.00.... If i just replaced the back pads, would the noise go away...

he said i really don't need it now, since I don't drive my car all the time. He said if i did drive all the time, he would suggest replacing them

If your rear pads are worn down, I'd invest the $20. in a set from Groton and see. Takes about 20 mins per wheel to change although "clicking" isn't generally a sound worn pads make. As far as rotors go, many a good one is trashed because to profit is so high in changing them. I've been driving since 1965 and have had some machined but haven't replaced one yet.

The only reason the mechanic is suggesting to replace the rotors and pads is because they have to be taken off the car anyway. New replacement parts for the drrum brakes is about $20. New rotors $120 and pads $30. All prices from FCPgroton, all OEM parts.
$400 is about half the price from what the dealer charges.
You didn't say if you ever use the ebrakes. I find it suspicious that a clicking noise is caused by rear drum brakes. I would have suspected a rock stuck in the treads or a nail.

He put the car up on the lift and moved the back tires, and both of them make a noise, he said that I still have life left in the back brakes. he said that pads are hitting the rust and if i did drive it alot that it wouldn't be so noticeable since the rust would come off. But i would like to get them changed since its so annoying when i drive.

Can you give me the part numbers that i need. I can't find the drum brakes on the fcpgroton site. I see the pads and rotors.

I replaced the rear pads and rotors on my 855 too. Rotors were about < $150 each. It does cost more than the front rotor. Not difficult to do it yourself but be patient when taking the old rotor off. The old E-brake shoes always in the way to prevent the old rotor to come off. It took me every bit of my arm force to remove it. I damaged the E-brake shoes when taking the rotor off. So I went to dealer to buy a set (2 sides) of E-brake shoes too. Be prepare for this to happen...

For Balo rotors, does $98 for 2 rotors or 1 ? I used Volvo parts from dealer. You did not include the E-Brake Shoes which could be damaged when taking the rotor off. I did not know about that and ended up rushing to dealer on Saturday morning to get the new E-brake shoes.

WAIT a minute. the only reason one should replace brakes (pads / rotors) is becasue they are worn, warped or broken! rust is not worn, warped or broken!

VERY VERY simple fix for your problem. get the car up to speed 40, 50 mph then just hit the brakes! not slam, that will warp the rotors then you will need brake service.

          works EVERYTIME!!

ebrake shoes delaminate due to corrosion...you should NOT break them taking the rotors off - or have to force tohe rotors past them UNLESS you dont follow the correct procedure nad freethem off FIRST using the star adjusters on the back of the brake plates...

odds are they will be corroded and delaminating anyway and they are cheap so if your doing the rotors do them as well while your there..
