I'm considering replacing the stereo on my 2000 S40. It skips all the time when you play a CD and the controls (skipping from song to song or station to station) are pretty flakey.

Any suggestions or warnings? It has the base CD player in it. Should I try to get an upgraded unit from Volvo or go with another manufacturer?

Propriatory connectors, I would stick with a Volvo unit. You can fit the one with the CD changer, it should be a streight swap and all the wiring should be in place. Try eBay for a radio.

But you can change the connector or get an adapter, they are available. It is just messey, the cable is short.

Is it also jumping stations on the radio? Sounds like the control panel got damaged, perhaps someone sprayed cleaning fluid directly onto the radio instead of onto a cloth. It is fixable, only has to be stripped and cleaned out.

Not sure about the radio -- I don't drive it regularly -- but I do know the buttons you use to skip to the next track on a CD don't always work. Sometimes they fast forward the song, sometimes they skip to the next (or previous) song, and sometimes they do nothing at all. Maybe that is a cleaning issue too.
