Soft brake pedal on first try... V70-XC70 1998

When I first step on the brake, the pedal feels soft. But, if I pump them the brake pedel feels normal....and engages at the top. Could this a sign of a bad master cylinder or..... somethinkg else.\"

Thanks in adavance.

A need to pump the brakes before you get a firm pedal is a clasic sign of a bad master brake cylinder. I haven't seen any rebuild kits so best solution is to replace with a rebuilt one. Not too difficult to do it yourself. Rebuilt master cylinder will be about $200. You will need a mini-vac to bleed the brakes at each wheel; I would suggest replacing all the existing fluid with new fluid as part of the job. Instructions are in the Haynes repair manual.

To rule out the vacuum pump as a problem: Push on the brake peddle real hard, then start the car. The brake peddle should go down when the engine starts.
Check the fluid level. It is probably original fluid and it is past due for a complete flush. Use a Volvo mechanic to do this flush, dealer or indie. They can also make a good diagnosis as to what is wrong.
A dealer will reccomend new pads/rotors (they really need the money) and even a new caliper or two. Then you will have to go back again and they will replace the MC!! Ask them for a diagnosis, do not give them a blank check.

Thanks Klaus, Just bought the car 2 nights ago and this is the only problem that stands out. I live 2 miles from 3 different Volvo indies and will take it in. So if the pedal goes to the floor this is good? If it does something else could it be a bad Vacuum pump?

I always like to diagnose this stuff before I go in so I know I'm not getting ripped off. Car has new rotors/pads so all is good there. Might as well flush the system anyway.

      Thanks

      Kirk

No, no, no. Not to the floor, just an inch or two! You are lucky with so many indies.
Your problem may be an O ring inside the MC, or just junk in the brake lines.
