Manual Transmission Service V70-XC70 1998

I am having trouble finding any directions for draining and filling a MANUAL transmission. I know there is plenty of information on the automatic one (which most people have). Anyone out there serviced their manual tranny?

-Greg

For BMW but maybe useful for you V70-XC70 1998

    Greg,

I just did my manual trans in my 1998 bmw 528i.
Not sure useful for you but the info is there:
    http://bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/189240

I used Redline MT-90. Most manual trans operates on similar principles.

Thanks. I also have a 1990 M3 which I do some of the work on myself as well. I am currently nursing that tranny until I can get a Blanton rebuild done on it. It shifts well, but it leaks, and that's bothersome.

I agree that any instructions on manual transmissions should be useful. So if it's not volvo, then bmw is the next best set of instructions.

      Best Regards,
      -Greg

For what it's worth, my 1994 855M (5spd manual wagon) with 325,00 miles had the tranny fluid chaged sometime in the mid 100,000's and the tranny shifts darned near as well as when it was new. No synchro noises, or roughness. I suppose I should change it again sometime soon. I figured I'd give some first hand experience from the other end of the maintenance spectrum.....not being a "nut" about changing stuff every 50k......Though I do change my oil every 5k! Did the clutch at 256k miles only due do bad rear main seal.

These appear to be really good trannies and I just picked up a 1999 V70M to replace/supplement my 850 as I have had such good experience with the manual cars.

      Claude,
Thank you for the information. It is reassuring to know that these transmissions are so sturdy.

Since you waited so long, I am curious to know if you ever saw the typical fluid leaks around the transmission housing. If you did, were you able to replace the seal/gasket, or did you just let it go?

      cheers,
      -Greg

sorry to be so long in responding, but believe it or not my undercarriage is bone dry. Never had any leaks with this one at all, save a rear main seal at 256k miles. I think I got a "good one". Hope my newer V70M is as good.

Your question about fluid leaks around the transmission housing piqued my curiousity. My S60 (2.4 with the M56) has this as well. The car was in for an inspection recently, but the seepage was not noted as a problem. Is this a known M56 issue? I take it it's not a real problem. It had me wondering if the rear main seal was starting to weep, but I'm guessing it's not that. My car only has about 55,000 miles on it now.

I've consistently drain my manual 850 and 70 series at 50,000 to 75,000 miles and used Redline MTL synthetic. It takes about 2 liters and there are none of the flush difficulties that we go through on the automatics. Remove both plugs on the drivers sides...the bottom is the drain plug, the top is the fill plug. Because of the location of the drain plug it will spill onto the subframe cross member and 'spash at bit, so put some protection around your catch pan....cuz some will miss. I've never had any transmission synchro failures and decided to change the fluid on my cars after reading about the second gear synchro going for those who follow the recommended maintenance which is "nothing".
I'd read about Redline about 7 years ago and have used it consistently. Once I didn't have it and used Mobil synthetic gear oil. It seemed fine, but like the redline because it's pink and if you have the car long enough to change it again....gives you a "visual" of the change in the fluid. Which may mean nothing. The Mobil was brown/tan.
While I would not use ATF, if you were stranded and needed something...better to use ATF than motor oil. The Moter oil is too slippery, will coat your synchros, they won't work properly and then I have no idea what to do.
One more tip...to get in whatever fluid you are using...you can put a long clear plastic hose (it's good to see the fluid passing down) on the end of a funnel and fish the hose down into the fill hole from the master cylinder are of the engine compartment.

excellent advice, especially the filling method. Glad to know I have an alternative to the dealer for the fluid.

Are either of your manual volvos turbo/T-5's? I thought that in the US they didn't offer manual with the 850 turbo. It was not until 1998 model year which that combination was offered, and of course by no coincidence, the year I bought it.

      thanks,
      -Greg

        yes....currently have 2 T-5 manual turbo's...had a 1998 S70 T-5 turbo. Think there were large turbo 850's, but can't say that I've seen one.

    Manual Transmission Service - Volvo part 1164213 V70-XC70 1998

The transmission oil for the 5-spd manual transmission is 1164213. I asked the parts fellow at my Volvo dealer and had him re-check, and this is the correct synthetic oil for the manual transmission. We had to order it; he said something like, "We've never ordered any of this before." Sorry, I can't tell you how to install it because I had my European specialist mechanic do the work as part of the 45,000-mile checkup.

      Thanks "BigGuy"
Having the correct part number is a big help. BTW, is your "European specialist mechanic" anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Manual Transmission Fluid - Volvo part 1164213 - mechanic is in MS V70-XC70 1998

Sorry, no, he is in Jackson, Mississippi. Drive on over, it will be a fun trip. Almost no one here (zero, zip, none) drives manual transmission, especially in "higher end" cars like Volvo. That's why the dealer was so amazed that 1. I have a 5-spd Volvo; 2. I wanted to change the transmission fluid.

The manual transmission gets some surprised looks from a few people. The day I picked up the car from the dealer (special order since they knew they couldn't get both the color I wanted and a manual 5-speed with a T-5 engine from any dealer lot), a couple of salesman came over in amazement. Now these are volvo salesman.

I was told that in the 1998 sales year, less than 5% of the US V70/S70's had manual transmissions.

          cheers,
          -Greg

There is a drain plug just to the rear of the drivers side drive axel. And, right above that a few inches another one. Make sure you loosen the fill nut first!!!! It is a Volvo synthetic manual gear oil. Make sure you specify to the dealer than it is MANUAL tranny oil. Most of the parts people I have come across are real knuckleheads. Had I listened to them, I would have been putting ATF in my manual tranny... I will try to get the part number of the oil and post it tonight.

    John

    P.S. I change mine every 30 K but I know I am a nut.

      Thanks John,
It sounds like it is the same procedure as my other car. Remove fill plug, remove drain plug, and go ahead and drain it. I will be sure to get volvo synthetic manual gear oil.

      Best Regards,
      -Greg
