Chain-store service question

I have a 97 850 non-turbo with 152K that I have been driving for four years. It needs a new serpentine belt since the last one was installed at 70K. A local national chain-store, Buffalo Tire and Auto, says they can replace and install the belt. Should I trust these guys with a Volvo? Also, the rotors on this car have never been replaced. I don't drive hard and neither did the previous owner. Should they be replaced now? If not, when? Do they have to be replaced by a Volvo specialist or can I replace them at a Meineke-type place? Finally, what is a good interval to change spark plugs?

Thanks to all.

Chain-store service question

Do you really want those high school drop outs learning on your car? Do you think they have ever even lifted a hood on a Volvo? Follow the wisdom of the other posts and run away from chainstores.

I am remembering the tale of a former Sears Auto employee I knew, who sent a couple of cars back to the owners without brake pads. Took the old ones off, had a 'smoke' break and forgot to put new pads on. There are dozens of other stories like these, wanna be one?

Just say no.

Chain-store service question

I would avoid any chain. Their mechanics are not very good and the most used tool they have is a hammer. Besides, they use generic parts made by the cheapest supplier they can find. There is NO guarentee on parts or labor, unless you pay extra for the insurance.
The next time your brake pads need replacing, replace the rotors at the same time. The dealer will charge you a small fortune to do 4 rotors and pads. An independent will charge less, but still a lot. If you change them yourself, it will cost less than $300 for OEM rotors and good quality pads.
We had a very novice lady on the board who changed her own serpentine belt in one hour! You are due for a timing belt at 152K and the S-belt could be changed at the same time. Find a good Volvo shop to do that for you.
Spark plugs should be changed at 30K intervals.

Chain-store service question - NO, RUN!

I agree, find a local repair shop that knows Volvo and patronize them. And don't cut corners with generic parts. Parts are cheap compared to labor for most car repairs.

Many of the chain outfits "reward" managers based on the number of add on items they can tack onto your service bill. In addition to the points of the other posters, don't be surprised when they call your attention to other items in need of "repair" at a "special deal" price. Find an honest indy and stick with him.
