Symptoms of a failing timing belt? How would i know if the timing belt is going or gone? 850

1994 Volvo 850 Sedan Non-Turbo Automatic.
Ok. The car has been running pretty good to up to 4-5 months ago. Not sure if this is part of the Symptoms of a failing timing belt.

First off, I would go for a long ride, 30-45 minutes, shut off the car for less then 5 minutes, hop back in it and start it up and I would get horrible hesitation on the acceleration. Very rough acceleration. So what i would do, is throw it in nuetral while I was driving, floor is a few times and it would go away. This would happen once in a while. Until recently where it started happening ever other time I was starting and stopping the car.

Ok now starting the car the next day would be fine first thing. Now while the car was shifting from 1st to 2nd, i would get a kind of winding spinning squealing sound. Then same thing would happen when it would shift gears until it got into drive. It definetly isnt any kind of fanbelt or power steering or alternator belt, etc.

Ok, finally, out of the blue, the car just stalled out on me on the parkway the other day out of nowhere. I pulled over, crossed my fingers, and it started again. So me being the crazy person i am, I decided to keep driving it the day after. Same thing happened when i was 5 miles from my house. This has happened at least 5 times within the last 3 week (this week the car has been in front of the house not running).

Ok, so i started to read on the boards. I changed the plugs, nothing. Changed the ignition switch, nothing. So I figured i try my crack at the Cam Position Sensor, by not replacing it, but trying to give it a temp fix by unplugging and plugging it back in like 10 times. Then i gave it one wack with a hammer lightly.

Then i tried starting the car back up, it started. Now, the car runs like crap. Seems to run fine in idle, but the second I touch the gas pedal, I get hesitation on the acceleration.. I tried driving it, same thing. The problem wont go away. Now the question is, can it be the timing belt? I read all the codes,

Here they are
A1 Codes
1-1-4 Program selector open circuit or short circuit to supply
1-4-3 Kickdown switch faulty or short to ground
2-2-2 S2 solenoid open circuit
2-2-3 Throttle position (TPS) sensor signal too low
3-1-3 Faulty signal from gear position sensor (PNP)

A3 Codes
1-4-1 Faulty pedal sensor, shorted to ground or supply
1-4-2 Faulty brake pedal switch, open or short
1-4-4 Brake discs overheated
2-1-1 Left front wheel sensor, not signal on moving off
2-1-2 Right front wheel sensor, no signal on moving off
2-1-3 Left rear wheel sensor, no signal on moving off
2-1-4 Right rear wheel sensor, no signal on moving off

A6
3-1-4 Camshaft Position sensor (CMP) signal missing or faulty

A7
1-2-2 ?????
1-3-2 ?????

B1
1-3-5 ?????
2-3-1 ?????
4-1-1 ?????
4-1-7 ?????

I did the little fix on the CMP, cleared the code for A6, and it didnt come back.

Also, I pulled out the fuel injectors out of the manifold, then I pulled them out of the metal that hold then from the top. Just to check if all the seals and gaskets were good. Just a little question, what is that air pressure valve on the side of that metal brackets that hold in the fuel injectors? Does it need air after you pull the fuel injectors out? I have no clue.

I mean i am mechanically inclined, and I have done plenty of work on cars before (even changed the PNP switch by myself), but I guess i was ripping things off for no reason. I was wondering if i messed up the air pressure on the fuel injectors, or it could be something else major like the timing belt.

Any answers would be so glady apprecaited, you have no idea. I live in Nassau County Long Island New York, and the car can probably make it to a place to get fixed of needed, but I was interested in fixing it myself and saving a bundle of money by ordering the parts online. If there is a reputable Volvo repair person in my area, please let me know. I would like to fix it by myself, but I sure as hell wouldnt mind have a down-to-earth repair person to let me know what i need to get this repaired. Also, the a/c inst working, and i just got it fixed last year with a new compressor.

Thanks again everyone, Carl.

Since you removed the injectors (why?) there is a good chance that the seals are damaged and leaking air.

An improperly installed PNP switch COULD be the culprit to your tranny woes

I agree that you have a lot of transmission symptoms. But one part that can cause the tranny to do all kinds of crazy behavior, is the TPS (Throttle Position Switch). A bad TPS may or may not screw up your idle and will make the car hesitate on acceleration - you have all of these symptoms.

The TPS is on the throttle body and is really easy to replace on your non-turbo, just carefully move a few vacuum hoses out of the way and get in there with a little socket. Two 7mm bolts and one electrical clip. You can order a TPS for $45 shipped from AutohausAZ.com and if I were you I would do that. It may not be the problem but it is worth a try before you take it in to the shop and start pouring out money.

As the other posts say, timing belt is either perfectly ok or your engine is ruined. There is no intermediate condition. If no proof exists it was changed on schedule in the past, change it or have it changed immediately.

The valve on the fuel rail is for bleeding off the fuel pressure so you can safely work on the fuel system. Also allows you to measure the fuel pressure with an appropriate gauge.

It is unusual to have so many codes at one time. It suggests a generic electrical failure. I would reset all the codes and wait to see if they reappear, but before you do FIRST do these things:

    1) Check that the charging system and battery are maintaining proper voltage and have no loose or corroded connections, including earth points (grounds). Do not remove any connections in the system while the car is running or ignition is on.

    2) Inspect all the wiring harnesses for breaks, corrosion from water and/or salt spray getting in, heat damage, excessive flexing, etc.

    3) Was your car in a major accident or had the instrument panel off, for instance for a new A/C evaporator? Or the transmission off for work or replacing main seal? If so then whoever did the work may not have reinstalled wiring or connectors to dashboard, console, or gearbox securely and something may have shaken loose.

    4) Do all of the electrical accessories on your car work? If some don't, this may also point to where damaged or broken wiring might exist.

    5) Don't hit sensors with a hammer or tool. They are definitely breakable.

    6) Maybe the stalling is due to a fuel system problem (like dirt in tank or clogged filter) not related to all the codes?

All of the above are events I have experienced on various cars I have owned.

    Good luck, and relax!!

Does the orange arrow lit when your ingnition key on or when your shifters in D or L position?
From the error code you listed, you should get a blinking arrow... unless the bulb behind the arrow is dead. I suspect that you have tranny related problem.

It's not your timing belt, if it were, you wouldn't get the car to run or the engine to turn over.
I have never seen so many codes before. Keep your list handy and clear all of the codes. Then concentrate on the ones that reappear. Your ABS no longer works, but you probably knew that.
You make me wonder if you installed the PNP correctly.

If the timing belt was gone, i.e. broken, all hell would break loose and the engine would be ruined. It is an interference engine - expensive metal parts bump into each other at high speed. If the timing belt had somehow slipped a tooth the car would be running poorly consistently. The fact that yours runs fine at times would indicate that it is not the timing belt. This is not to say it couldn't break tomorrow but your problems would seem to be elsewhere.

timing belt should be replaced every 75K.. or else.

Actually, I've read recently that the timing belt recommendation has been reduced to 30k to 35k.

Who in the world told you that? 50K for '93, then 70K from '94-'98 and from '99 up it's 105K. I've never seen any other numbers official or from other owners, but if you want to change the TB at 30-35K miles, be my guest.
