60,000 mile service, keyless remote, etc S60 2001

I took my S60 T5 down to Lincoln Mercury Volvo of Tulsa for its 60,000 mile
service today. I talked to David Taylor, the service manager, showed him a
couple copies of Rolling Mag and pointed out the page that shows the companies
that give discounts to VCOA members. He was impressed and said that he could
probably swing it too. Seemed like a nice guy and pretty familiar with Volvos
although he has only worked on them since 1978. (I think that is when he
graduated from High School.)
They seemed to treat me OK, took me down to the mall (which I only get to maybe
2 or 3 times a year) while they worked on my car. By the time they brought
me back at 1 pm they were done and the cost was about what I expected, a little
over $500. BTW this is the first time I have taken a car to a Volvo dealer
since maybe 1975 or 1976. So it was kinda strange to me especially at that
price.
They told me that they cannot reprogram a keyless remote, that I have to buy
a new one and have them program it and that will cost something over $250.
Does this sound right? Anybody figured out a way around this? I only got one
with the car and then bought another one on ebay for $3. It looks just like
the one I have, has the same part number and everything.
So if anyone has any ideas on this I'd be most eager to know.

60,000 mile service, keyless remote, etc S60 2001

I recently purchased a 2001 S80 T6 which also only came with one remote. I searched several Volvo forums, called several Volvo dealers and stopped in at a large Volvo-only independent shop for a solution.

The answer was the same all the way around; They've got you.

I ended up spending just shy of CA$300 for a remote and a spare key (I only received one master key with remote and the valet key with the car) at Volvo of Toronto. I had to pre-pay for the key itself. The following day once the key had been cut, I brought the car in so that they could program the remote and the key. That took about an hour.

They cannot do anything with eBay remotes because there is a code on the packaging the remote comes in that is required when they're doing the programming. The software required to program keys and remotes is VIN-based to match your car and is downloaded by the dealer from the 'mother ship' in Sweden. The independent shop I visited advised that the license fee from Volvo for them to have access to the required software is, not surprisingly, cost-prohibitive.

Likely not what you wanted to hear, but I hope that helps.

Hmmm... Tulsa must have slightly lower hourly rates than the local (one and only) dealer in OKC. I'm pretty sure they quoted well over $500 for the 60k service on my '02 T5. I'm not there quite yet, but will most likely do that one myself.

Very interesting story on the remote entry programming. On the 850 T5 that I had, you could program the remote yourself, no problem. But a used (guaranteed to work) remote was more like $20-$30 on eBay at the time. Guess I'm glad I got two remotes with the S60!
