MAP sensor issue???? 850

Has anyone ever had intermittent MAP sensor issues? Just wondering cause the 96 850 non-turbo GLT has started intermittent rough idle. When the rough idle occurs, black smoke comes out the exhaust, and engines runs quite rough. Clears up in a few minutes and may not do it again for a few minutes or a few days... No codes. Dealer has not been able to replicate, so no fix yet. Just sounds like a flakey MAP sensor.

Thank you in advance for any assistance....

Oliver

    Thanks guys for the input.

Took the car into the dealer today and they found that the Fuel Pressure Regulator is bad and the fuel pressure is quite low. The computer is trying to compensate and is dumping large amounts of fuel making the car run really rich. The FPR is to be replaced next Wednesday. I sure could use the better milage. More to come...

    Thanks again

When my 850 had the FPR fail it did exactly that. The pressure went through to the vacuum line in front of the manifold and into the intake. I only had this problem during cold starts, usually in the morning. A long cranking period followed by a puff of black fuel smoke and then idling like nothing was ever wrong. Of course that could have contributed to getting only 18mpg around town.

I had this symptom (though it occurred all the time) on an older Volvo with a stuck fuel pressure regulator. The pressure was over twice what it was supposed to be.
