1995 850 turbo sedan The drivers seat belt doesn't retract or for that matter does not pullout unless you fiddle with it for minutes. Con you lubricate this thing. I had the B-pillar cover off. I can get a spare for a friend< but I would rather fix the one on the car. Also what precautions do I take so the power accident tensioner doesn't blow up in my Face? Thanks Rick

I had the exact same situation with my 1995 850 turbo sedan drivers side seat belt machanism.

Ignorance is bliss- or just plain ignorance. I took the unit out and literally hammered at it until the mechanism unjammed. Now it works, marginally at least.

I called my very good and dependable indy volvo mechanic shop - and the manager "enlightened" me about the explosive cylinded related to the SRS system. Reckon I am lucky the thing did not explode and kill me!

BTW- the new unit is not inexpensive - about $279 ( ouch).

I will be replacing it nonetheless- as it is a safety issue.

Don't fiddle with the damn thing, it is not only a safety restraint but an explosive device to boot. Replace it with a new one or a known good unit. Leave the key in the off position, unplug the tensioner and then simply remove the unit as you would normally. Do not cycle the key back on until you have the new unit installed and the tensioner connector back in place. If you screw up and cycle the key it will log a code and the SRS light will come on and disable the system until you clear the code.

The bags themselves are fairly impressive when you touch them off but the seat belt tensioners were kind of a let down but it still pays to be careful.
