odometer gear fix - got gear, tips on separating cluster?? Installation??? 850 1994

on my 94 850 turbo with VDO cluster, i am about to tackle replacing the odometer gear (darn $50 gear!!). trial removal of screws on front cover yesterday but it didnt budge... got a parts diagrahm today and it looks like the clear front and guage face panel come out to get to odo assembly... is that with just the outer ring of screws on the back??...any one done this? all the darn plastic under the dash is so darn brittle i am afraid the whole assembly will crack..would a little penetrating fluid help it separate or would it screw up the electrical parts (really all of the innards except the turbo boost guage).
ANY tips would be helpful...thanks for the help!@!!

try matthewsvolvosite.com for some guidance. Just did mine on friday and it was not too bad. Very good directions and pictures. I saw some hint about taking out the other two or three screws and lifting the whole dash up and out of th way but I did not take the time or effort to try that method. It would be well worth the extra time to get the whole dash removed.
The actual gear replacement is very easy process.

Was it hard to remove the turbo gauge vacuum line from the cluster? I have heard taht it's easy to break the cluster wehen you remove it.

TURBO differences!!!!!! (no one told me about! LOL) 850 1994

the turbo line is fairly high up on the back left of the cluster and is really no problem to dis- and re-connect. what NO ONE told me, even the superb Matthewsvolvosite.com (and i found out after screwing up my turbo guage) is that the nut on the brass nipple on the back of the cluster MUST be unscrewed to remove the guage cluster from the white housing -- that is, after the clear cover is removed but before prying off the panel to get to the odo. OOPS!!!!!
i knocked off the boost guage needle while trying to pry the face off without taking off that nut!!! now my next question is.... WHAT IS THE NORMAL POSITION OF THE TURBO BOOST GUAGE NEEDLE??? straight up, at the point of the change of the arc color?
as usual, MANY THANKS ahead of time!!!!!
