CV boots - clean/regrease, or replace whole axle? 850 1997

My mechanic says the left CV boot is "wide open" and the right one is cracked. He wants to clean and regrease the axles and replace the boots. He feels that's better than replacing with non-OEM axles (provided the existing units are not yet noisy, which they are not), and new original Volvo axles are of course very expensive. He is a master SAAB technician but also works on Volvos quite a bit. He wants $330 total for both sides, reusing the existing axles.

DIY:
New axles from FCP Groton would cost me $240 for both sides. Alternatively, CV Boot Kits (inner and outer boot, clamps, and grease) from FCP Groton would cost me $51 for both sides.

Is cleaning/regreasing instead of replacing really the way to go? If so, is his price reasonable? How much trouble would a DIY with the boot kits be?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

CV boots - clean/regrease, or replace whole axle? 850 1997

Always alot of discussion/opinion about CV boot repair vs complete axle replacement. Seems to boil down to what you can do yourself vs condition of CV joint vs mechanics time vs $$$. Certainly ALOT cheaper but messy and time consuming to just repack the CV joint and replace the outer boot. But that depends on the condition of the joint. Faster but more expensive to replace the axles although some folks have struggled getting the axles out of the tranny. I've seen "rebuilt" ones straight out of the box bind up and not rotate well and you really don't know what FCP Groton means when they say "exceeds Volvo specs". The boot material could just be thicker??? If you have the time and ability and the joints aren't noisey you can save maybe $300+ by doing the "boot thing". Some folks have struggled though freeing up stuck axle splines. Mine came out very easy and I was able to replace the outer boots with the axles still on the car but it's a little tough on your back. As with alot of repairs if you're trying to save money it's sometimes a roll of the dice so to speak. Good luck.....

Your mechanic may be correct, in that the joints are not badly scarred and can be cleaned and repacked. His amount of labor time to do this is probably justified, but ask him what he would charge to just replace the axles. Less labor time this way. That way he could clean and pack the old ones and give them to another customer??? Just not me :)

I would guess about 1&1/2 hours to replace both axles.

Yup, repacking should work for awhile anyway.

Did that once on my old BMW. Lasted the life of the car. However, that was on a rear wheel drive car which probably stresses the CV joint less....

The repair of the existing axles would probably work all right for a while. I had a boot replaced on my son's Nissan, and it lasted for another year. Personnally, I would replace the axles, especially if I planned on keeping the car for a while yet. I recently replaced one axle with a new one from FCP. With new, you should be good to go for several more years without having to worry about when it is going to fail. I you DIY, it will even cost less. And of course, labor is what eats your lunch on that job.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

FCP Groton has new aftermarket axles for $119 a piece: http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850driveline.htm No core charge.
Here is what FCP writes: "The Axles that we are now selling come complete with inner and outer joints and boots. They are pre assembled and are ready to install as is. These are brand new units so you will not have to send the cores back to us like most places. The DSS axles have been made to excede Volvo specs and have a limited lifetime warrany on the parts (does not include labor)."

Seems quite cheap, almost too much so? I usually trust FCP, just wondering if anyone has experience with these axles made by DSS?

I had split boots on my 96 850 T-5, with a little noise from one of the joints. I cleaned and repacked, and have driven 1 year and about 15k with no problems. Cost me about $30 and a few hours.

heck, i just used cheap NAPA axles...doing fine! and a 45 min per side job too... 850 1997

really more trouble to rebuild than replace, and a lot cheaper. a thorough discussion is down a ways in the forum. MY big tip:
Once you take off the axle nut and disconnect the brake stuff (per posts or Haynes manual)......DON'T try to pull the hub off the ball joint....JUST remove the two A-arm bolts at the subframe. then you can pull the whole thing out enough to knock the axle end thru the hub, then pull the axle out of the tranny.... SIMPLE job this way. those lower ball joints can be stuck like they are welded on!!!!!

        good luck

          Everybody,

Thanks for all your input. I got under the car this morning. The mechanic was not kidding, one outer boot torn all the way around, the other cracked. Don't know how long it's been that way, but last fall both boots looked dry.

However, I decided my life is too busy as it is, so it would actually be more prudent to cough up the money for the mechanic - get it done and move on. He's working on it as we speak, and is planning his cruise to the Bahamas too. Outsourcing is a beautiful thing. I'll go with the old axles and hope for the best, though I plan on keeping the car but we only drive it 10K miles a year.

          Cheers.
