Steering Rack Replacement 850

1997 850 Sedan - I was told that I need to replace the steering rack in order to have an alignment done. What signs ought I be looking for to determine whether this is indeed true or not?
There is no squealing of the rack when turning from knock to knock and the turning feels relatively smooth as well.
