Replacing O rings in oil pan 850


Does anyone know the procedures for replacing the O rings in the oil pan of an 850 turbo? My understanding is that they're the same type rings as the turbo oil drain line. I want to try replacing these on my car to see if it helps with the lifter noise.

    Replacing O rings in oil pan 850

    It's real simple, take the oil pan off and replace them. On the front wheel drive cars it is pretty darn simple because there is no engine subframe like on the 960's. You'll need to hold the power steering lines back out of the way and tweek a few things to get the pan out and then have to deal with scraping off the old loctite type sealant that they use on the pan and reapplying new stuff but it is really not too bad. Volvo actually makes a kit that covers all of the cars for about $20.00 and the correct sealant is probably another $25.00 or so. It takes me a 1-1.5 hours to do one, I would expect it would take less than a day to do your first one on your back in the drive way at home. Just schedule it into your next oil change.

      I have to do it myself for my 94 855T but have been putting it off. However I think i'll takes Mark's advice too and work it into my next oil change. I like how he made it sound easy which after you do it I imagine it's a lot less intimidating.

        Replacing O rings in oil pan 850

        Have you guys ever seen a "strap wrench" or a "band clamp", they go by a few different names and you see them used to bind loads, hold stuff together in wood working and the like? Typically they are a 1" nylon strap of whatever length that has a ratcheting mechanism on one end. Take one of these and wrap it around the power steering lines and the engine subframe. Ratchet it down tight and it will pull the lines back out of the way like a bungie cord never could. Be careful though as you could destroy stuff with the clamp if you get carried away. The one part of his tutorial that I liked was the test fit part. I do this operation all of the time so I do not even think about stuff like that but a few test fits with a dry pan would be a great idea.

          I know what you mean by band clamps and strap wrenches, sure. The topic post caught my eye because I'm hot on the issue myself to see if the o ring fix will solve my pre warm up lifter noise on my daily driver. My first Volvo was an 89 745 TIC I bought new and when the warranty ended I started going to a local indy. He was still working on my 850s up until two years ago when he retired, I haven't been able to find any one I trust since then. So far I've diagnosed and repaired problems that I never would have while he was around. The o ring and PCV jobs are next and I couldn't be doing it without web sites like this although I drove British cars for a few years so maybe that was good training. But...it's great to have folks like you mark that come here and offer support.
