white engine? V70-XC70 1998

I have seen several references to "white" engines. What is a white engine? Is having one a good or a bad thing, and would a '98 v70 awd have one?

Thanks

The old RWD had the 4 cyl, cast iron block engines, that were painted red, and thus are referred to as "red engines".

The front wheel drives have the 5 cyl, cast aluminum block engines, with no paint, and are referred to as "white engines".

all FWD/AWD volvos from '93 forward have the white aluminum engine, versus the red B230 cast iron engines of the RWD volvos
