Dick,

If it's that nefarious P0108 that I had and still have, after repeated attempts at clearing with battery disconnection and Code reader clearing, it is the MAP sensor.

I believe my 99 V70 is a late 98 so it may be the sameas yours: There are two vacuum lines which come off the intake manifold. One is about 1/2" and runs to the purge valve. The other appears to be about 3/8" and provides vacuum to a small rectangular shaped "Denso" device I have the # written somewhere, clipped under some plastic just below the hood and above the radiator to the driver's side of car centerline.

The sensor has a three wire connector that can be backprobed so as to check input voltage - should be 5v, ground and output voltage. This was the first time I "backprobed" anything (I shant say more) and the connector appears to be constructed so as to permit this kind of probing without disconnection. The sensor itself slips into a metal slide in style mount that easily enables removal of the sensor.

Rather than purchase the sensor, because I'm 90% sure it is bad as output voltage never varied much at different throttle settings, I am waiting for verification from a friend who is a genuine mechanic so he can verify my diagnosis. The sensor was between $70 and $80 at FCP. I also called Boston Volvo for a price.

I promise to post when I know for sure, but assuming you have the same assembly and a voltmeter, I'd like to hear what you have to say. I would have tried to take a picture and post it (this would have been my first shot with the digital camera), but alas my wife took the camera with her for the weekend.

Good luck

MAF sensor is located on the air inlet hose between the air filter box and throtle body. It measures the volume of air that goes into the engine.

True, but...more specifically, it's right up at the top of the air hose from the air filter box to the turbo. You'll see a fairly large connector plugged into it. The connector is caddy-corner from the fuse box under the hood.

This is the MAP sensor, not MAF. This stands for manifold absolute pressure sensor. Just trying to find the darn thing.

The diagram in the parts section in Vadis is not very good....very small so when you blow it up you can't see much. But the sensor itself is screwed down in an area that appears to be in front of the intake manifold on the driver's side. The diagram looks like it's sort of triangular in shape with the screw in the unused corner section of the triangular harness. The part that an electrical connector plugs into on the harness faces that screw.

I just went out and looked at my car and the only thing with a connector with wires going to it is some sort of sensor that is slightly under and in front of the throttle hose (from the intercooler). It is turned around so it's difficult to get confirmation as to whether it's the same part as above. You'll have to take the trottle cover off to get in to where you can even see it very well. To get to it you'll have to most likely take the intercooler to throttle hose off.

Hope this helps. Sorry that I mistook a MAP for a MAF.

MAP sensor is located just behind the passenger side headlight. It has a purple electrical connector.

I noticed there was a MPA sensor there too in Vadis but it went by another name (MAP longitudinal??? or something like that). There were actually 2 MAP sensors but the later with a slightly different name description. Not sure which MAP the original poster is speaking of.

Not all Volvo's are created equally. The 98 S 70 has the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor, located as spoken by John. Some do have a MAP sensor which is located above the radiator right next to the relay's. The 98 we have does not have the MAP sensor, so-----. Anyway, right now the check engine light is off and all is ok, for now.
