Low Oil Level sensor 850 1993

RE: my 1993 850. For some reason, my amber "low oil level" light comes on intermittently. It only happens when the engine is first started and will stay on until the engine is shut off. It's not on all the time though. The oil level of course is always fine. I replaced the sensor in the oil pan while replacing the pan gasket a few months ago. I got a new but inexpensive oil level sensor relay and replaced that too. It still goes on. Does anyone know why this happens and what else is involved in the circuit besides the relay and sensor? Thanks.

On my 93 the amber low oil level light went through a period of being a pain and I started looking into what to do with it, but then settled down into actually working. I think maybe a couple oil changes cleaned off some gunk. Maybe there is some sludge in your oil pan getting to it? I guess the sensor was not reliable enough to last past the 93 model year so maybe replacements are no better?

Anyway - look back in the archives. As I recall you can just take the 2 wires that go into the sensor and connect them together to bypass it.

Just one more thing that makes us 93 850 owners 'special'

There is no "low oil level" indicator on my car. The oil can is the oil pressure warning light. When you dropped the pan, did you find a bunch of junk on the bottom? The pickup tube should have been replaced at that time. There is anouther post regarding oil pressure. Look for it, and follow Rule 308s advice.

Actually I was thinking there wasn't a level indicator on these cars either, but then I noticed it was a '93 and thought that maybe it had one that year?? Since mine (and previous '94) didn't have it, if his did, I thought, he really doesn't need it.

Didn't really think about the oil pressure light...that's much more serious and should be dealt with. If the pump doesn't work then the upper part of your engine is dry and that means wearing parts...not good.

      Go with what Klaus says.

The only other issue in my mind would be the wiring from the sensor or relay to the computer. Fault tracing one of these would be a real PITA. I would suggest you live with it unless you want to do this and check your oil level regularly. Does it burn much oil between changes?

No, it doesn't burn any oil so far - just a quart every 1,500 miles. It's more of a nuisance. The worst part is that it's intermittent, not coming on for days, and then appearing.

My 93 does this as well. My low oil level light(amber), not to be confused with the oil pressure light(red) comes on quite often as well. It happens when: I am a 1/2 quart low, parked on a hill before starting the engine, or restarting the engine within a minute or so of shutting it off. For two years now it has annoyed me, but most of the the time its off. I notice if my oil level is completely full, it never comes on when parked on a hill, but sadly still after a short restart. I use Maxlife 10 30, or 10 40, don't remember.

Sorry I offer no help, didn't want you to think you were alone

        Jeff

The European versions of the 850 got both an oil level sensor and an oil pressure sensor.
