Tailgate won't open V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

Im helping a friend with her 98V70xc......the tailgate won't open from the inside or outside. It seems to be locking and unlocking when the lock is turned, and when the key fob buttons are pressed, but the hatch lever moves/feels like it is locked.

How do I get the gate open so I can get some lube in the mechanism?

Is there a common failure/fix for this so she doesnt have to take it to the dealer?

Thanks

looks like your problem just happened about one month ago. i just noticed mine today.

were you able to get any solution to the problem. and if you had it fixed did you go to the volvo dealer or any mechanic. and cost?

thanks for any answer you can provide.

Did you "lock" the tailgate with the key? The key slot needs to be in the verticle position.
If you tried to get rid of the squeeks by moving the latch forward, then just push the tailgate forward when you try to unlock it.

I tried pushing and pulling on the tailgate while I actuated the tailgate hand lever with no luck(turned key and tried in both positions). If I could get the thing open, I would hopefully be able to lube the mechanism(or at least replace it).
Is there any safety lockout/kid lock that my friends' 6 year old boy could have messed with.

Well, thanks for your reply. I will take another look at it, and hopefully not have to take it over to Borton.

You're only 1 hour north of me, but it would be the blind leading the blind. The child lockout can only be activated with a screwdriver AND the tailgate must be open to do that.
When the locking button pops up, it is no longer locked. So that leaves just one option: the panel must come off to find out what came undone. Call Borton's on Monday and ask if there is an easier solution. They are pretty good about helping on the phone, if they know you. If not, let me know and I will call them for you.

My friend with the XC is down in the city, and actually pretty close to Borton. I have heard that if you bring donuts with you to Borton they will do all sorts of things for ya. I am going to sugguest this to my friend. My question is....do you take the donuts downstairs to parts and service, or do you go right out to the service bays with them?

I go to the other borton, the one in Golden Valley. They are nicer there.
I adjusted my rear hatch last week because of the rattling. Well, I cured the noise, but it was hard to open. Today, it would not open!!! After pushing and pushing, the latch caught. So I loosened the catch. I still have to push on the tailgate, but not so hard, and the rattles are still gone.
Push really, really hard.

My admittedly flawed memory recalls that your friend is not the first one this has ever happened to -- but I tried the brickboard search function and came up on empty. Whatever the old search always used to come up with hits -- I don't know about the improved version.
