Flame Arrestor PCV Valve Cleaning V70-XC70 1999

I would like some guidence on the location and cleaning process of the PCV system and flame arrestor My 99 has 178KM on it and no cleaning or maintence has been done. Now I have noticed a small oil leak around the main seal was wondering if the increase in pressure may have caused this.

The RMS leak is probably a result of a age on the seal and possible crankcase pressure. You can test for positive pressure by removing the oil cap and laying a flat sheet of lighweight paper over the opening. If it blows off or lifts up, there is pressure. If it is pulled down onto the opening slightly, the system is functioning.

The trap/valve is located below the main air intake hose. You might go to the bay13 web site for a picture (although the pic is of an 850, location etc is similar). You probably do not have a flame trap but the housing is still there in 99. Also check the vacuum line elbows that are attached to the intake plenum and the trap housing etc. they tend to turn to mush over time and allow the vacuum to escape through leaks.

You may be able to prolong the life of the RMS by repairing the system and it is a must anyway even if you get the seal replaced since the pressure will degrade the new seal too.

best of luck

I just went through this. My clogged PCV blew the turbo. I took the intake manifold off to access all of the hoses and oil seperator. The thing that really made the system fail was the valve on the intake hose just before the turbo. I cleaned it with a drill bit and washed it out with NaOH and water.
