weak instrument panel illumination S80 2002

The instrument panel illumination thumbwheel switch only controls the background lighting behind the dials. It does not affect the milage or time numerals. Is this switch working correctly?

In ignition position 1 all the numerals are very faint. When engine is running they grow to twice the brightness but to me still not enough. How can I tell if the illumination sensor behind the shift lever is working? Can these two items be programed to be brighter? Thanks

Your battery is now 4 years old. Could it be that it no longer supplies a full 12 volts? I don't believe there is an adjustment for brightness on the LED screen.

Klaus, I checked the battery at the + terminal under the hood at rest, reading was 12.45 volts. The next reading with engine running was 14.28 volts.
