Long cranking every morning solved 850

My 850 has been getting very bad lately. The cranking time has increased from 2 seconds to 10 seconds, but only when the engine is cold. I had guessed that the IAC was dirty - nope, clean. Throttle body dirty - nope, clean. Plugs, no. Even tried to look at the fuel system relay.
Then I decided to check the fuel pressure. What fuel pressure? I pushed on the schrader valve before trying to start the car and nothing. Zip. The FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR failed. It was slowly leaking pressure back into the gas tank. A new one is on order and will be installed next week.

Check this out:
When looking at the fuel system relay, which is over the radiator, I couldn't get the plug off. It must be fused. Close inspection found that 3 of the wires going into the plug had cracked insulation. I can see the copper! Today, I will wrap them with electrical tape if I can get my fingers in there.

    KlausC:

Does the 850 have a non-return valve by the fuel filter under the car? The reason I ask is that I had the same prob with my ex-volvo, a 740. The problem was with the valve which leaked back fuel pressure making starting from cold very difficult. After I changed it and the fuel filter, all was back to normal.

I was hoping for the same thing myself. The valve on my 240 died and was replaced easily. I couldn't find one on the 850, so I went to Borton Volvo. The nice guys there diagnosed the system and the solution. A dozen donuts = free diagnostics!

Klaus, thanks very much for the info. This might be the issue I am having (my previous post -- http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=1061174). Is this an easy job?

      Replacing FPR on 850 850

I just go done replacing my FPR. Haynes manual leaves a lot to be desired!
Checked for no pressure at the Schrader valve first. Took off the 2 10mm bolts that hold the fuel rail on to the intake manifold. Unplugged the injectors from the electric lines. Popped the aluminum cover off the fuel rail, that was not in the manual and made the job so much easier!
Then I unscrewed the fuel line hold down tab on the other side of the engine. Hanes said to unscrew the fuel lines from underneath the car - I skipped that part, too messy. So, the injectors wouldn't "pop" out when I tugged on the fuel rail. I rotated each one to release the grip on the bottom gasket, and out they came.
I unclipped the vacuum hose to the FPR and poped the fuel line clamp. Then rotated the entire assembly upside down. Two 10mm bolts hold down the FPR, be careful - there is a sleeve between the FPR and the rail. Do not drop it down the engine compartment! You may be cursing too much if you do.
Haynes now says installation is the reverse. Almost!
After the fuel line is reconnected, reconnect the vacuum line and make sure the vacuum line is routed inboard of the two manifold screws that hold down the the rail. I cleaned off the bottom of the injector nozzels, repositioned the injectors and gave them an easy push into place. Make sure the electrical connectors face in the proper direction. Secure the connectors and bolt down the 10mm screws for the rail. Put the 8mm hold down tab back where you found it. Clean off the cover and tap it back into position. All done.
      Car starts every time!
      Have fun,
      Klaus

Not really. First, check the fuel pressure in the morning - before starting the car! A new FPR at FCP is $107+s&h, so make sure before you buy.
The fuel rail has to come off, which means the injectors have to come off. The FPR is screwed on to the back side of the fuel rail cover. Don't ask me why, I am not an engineer. The two bolts that hold the fuel rail on need to be torqued to 88lbs + an additional 75 degrees. Don't ask me why, I am not an engineer.
The hose clamps are the single use type, I suggest going to the auto supply house and getting 2 new clamps for fuel lines with a screw tensioner.
