1996 front Oxygen sensor wiring - color matches??? 850

after much checking and finally replacing the air mass sensor, the service light seemed to point to the O2 sensors. I put in new Bosch Oxygen sensors in the front and rear. It now codes indicating P0131 - low voltage 1st sensor circuit.

Is there anyone who can verify the color match with a 1996 FRONT O2 sensor?
The Bosch I picked up is 15727 and has a 2 white, 1 gray and 1 black wire.
Not sure if I hooked it up correctly.....

what I have connected is:

car green = sensor white
car black = sensor white
car Green/gray = sensor gray
car Green/black = sensor black

many thanks in advance
....... getting FRUSTRATED.....

I'm assuming you have a "universal" type sensor where you splice wires with a splice kit. Think I have this right. The sensor wires are:

Gray = ground
Black = signal wire to ECU
White (2) = heater wires

You need the car's black wire to sensor black wire and the sensor gray wire to ground which I'm guessing is green although I thought there was a gray wire when I did mine. The other two will be heater wires and it doesn't matter which way they're connected. Hope this helps

Just reread your post to make sure. Yes, you have your sensor signal wire and ground wire hooked to the heater wires. Hook sensor black to car black, gray to green and the remaining white wires to the two you have left either way.

Should be good to go.

thanks for your input. I moved the wires. I also removed that plastic connector and soldered them together. I then removed both battery cables for 2 hours.

After 25 miles I got the Check engine light on again.

Darn!!!!!!!!!!!!!(not my first choice of words)

The local volvo mechanic is wetting his chops. He wants $300.

Just get OEM sensor from Eeuroparts.com or Borton or a dealer near you -if you are 100% sure it IS the front sensor causing the light. Did you check you vacuum lines?

I went to the local dealer and called one out of state to verify the color sequence at the connector. I was correct to begin with earlier. It runs fine if the codes are reset. Just after 30-60 miles it will shudder once and the Check engine light will go on.

I haven't yet checked for vacuum leaks. Wouldn't that be noticeable right from the start?
Honestly,,,,,,
I'll give things a look, but right now I'm more inclined to let the "pros" at the other local shop take a try at it.

Thanks for your input!

I have heard that the dealer and even on-line vendors had part numbers for their oxygen sensors down wrong and were selling incorrect 02 sensors. Might be worth double crossing part numbers with Bosch themselves. In other words, you may have the wrong sensor in your car. Just a thought but I recall reading this somewhere (maybe here) not too long ago.

I checked and the online Bosch site also lists a #15097 for the manual transmission. Try and get that into the autoparts folks heads.....their system only shows the one universal Bosch part number. I'll try and get my $60 back, but it may not help.

Well, I may have solved the issue "temporarily". I cooked the old sensor with a torch for a few minutes. No codes last 100 miles.

Got my fingers crossed - since it will be likely traded in with the next couple weeks. I'm on to the Asian autos now.

Thanks to all who have helped over the years.
