problems starting after refueling 850 1996

own a turbo wagon with 140,000 miles, for the past eight months car has difficulty starting up after refueling. Takes 4-5 tries before starting up. It seems to be worse the less gas i have in tank upon refilling. Also on really hot day sitting in sun it has had difficulty starting. Thoght i read in the past this might have something to do with charcoal canister? Runs great no problems until i go to refill empty gas tank. please help, if you know solution. P.M.

Don't know the answser, but have a suggestion. With tank partly full, say 1/2 tank plus, turn off car and open gas cap. Close up again without adding fuel and see if it acts the same (hard starting) as when refilling from a low point. If so, that would seem point to something in the evap/vacuum system since teh only thing you have changed is to open the fuel system to equalize pressure.

I had trouble starting a previous car when the tank was low due to debris in the bottom of the tank. This car often idled and ran erratically, especially on up/down grades (always worse with a low level in the tank). Cured completely by replacing the tank and inlet strainer. Once started does your car run as it should?

Trouble starting on a hot day without other symptoms might be due to leaking fuel injectors. It would be hard to reason how this symptom by itself would have anything to do with how much fuel was in the tank.

Maybe there is more than one problem?

I wouldn't expect problems like the above to set the check engine light, but the evaporative system could set it - is yours on?
