Fuel Tank System Leak - Purge Valve Failure S70 1998

Check engine light came on and took my s70t5a to the dealer. this is what they came up with:

"Found Code EFI-611 Fule Tank System Large Leak Permanent Fault, I began fault tracing by erasing the dtc and performing a fuel tank quick test. I fougn the system failed and the code returned. I verified that gas cap is secured properly and found no signs of damage to the evap system hoses. I did notice excessive debris in the purge line filter indicating the canister has deteriorated. As a result the charcoal particles have become trapped in the purge valve causing it not to seal properly (sic?) resulting the DTC being set."

Question is, do I need to fix this? Also, I've driven the car three times since getting the above report from the dealer and the check engine light has not come back on. Thoughts???

I got the same code on my 98 V70, the dealer replaced the sticking "charcoal canister evap. valve". The part itself is around $35. So, you save a lot by doing it yourself. Also, check for brittle pipes/tubings. They replaced one of those too.

Also you won't pass an emission test if your district has them.

If it's deteriorated and there's gunk in it, then yes. You'll get the CEL again and your ECU will try to adjust for these bad conditions, generally making your ride one that's not up to par. I'm not sure what else it will do but I know it will lower your MPG.
