The other day I was changing the air filter on my '93 GLT and took it for a spin around the block with no filter and was amazed at the increased throttle response and backpressure. Obviously (?) running without an airfilter is horrible for the engine, but I am getting such a greater throttle response it is hard to put a filter back on. Do you have any suggestions for building an intake for the car or why it is so sluggish with a filter in? thank you so much for your feedback!!

    Isnt it nice, lots of unfiltered air mixing with lots of fuel equals lots of power. Your milage has gone down. Your engine management is probably running "lean". Keep it up and you will be in for a valve job!
    That doesnt take into consideration the dirt in the combustion chanber that is now stuck to your rings and scraping the cylinder walls.

    Buy a K&N Air filter from and follow the directions carefully if you want to keep your car and not trade up for a turbo. It will be almost exactly like no filter...you'll feel the difference!     1) aftermarket low restriction air filter and/or exhaust system

    2) trade the car in on a turbo model or better yet a BMW with "valvetronic" - see:

    The phenomenon you describe is normal - your car also will usually perform better if the exhaust system is taken off.
