Programming remote for 98 S 70 S70 1998

Is this a dealer only type thing or can one do it? Son needs a new one and the old man is in charge of finding out. Appreciate the help---

You can't do it yourself on a '98. Dealers are expensive, so I had mine done by a Volvo specialist shop. If you have one you go to regularly, they might even do it for free. Otherwise, maybe $20. But I got my extra remote from Ebay.

    1998? S70 1998

1998s need the dealer to dive into the car's electronics and key the car to the remote.

Helpful hint: the cheap plastic loops on the remotes break after you drop 'em on your concrete driveway for the 99th time.

Just buy a new remote on e-bay and swap the insides. I've done it on both of mine. Keep the new innards in your "box o' parts" in case it actually does fail electronically.

As far as my dealer can be trusted, only he can program the remotes on the 1998. And he is not cheap! He also didn't like it if I would buy a new remote on Ebay!
Ask you local dealer what he charges to program one, and then what he charges for a new one and if programming is included in the price.
    Shop carefully,

    Dick:
Anyone can do it once you have the procedure.
Procedure may be in the book.
If you are trying to program a second one, remember that the procedure requires you to program ALL of them one after another. If you just do the "new" one it will replace the first one which will then no longer work.
    My local dealer quoted $35!
I did it myself, after realizing the situation above.
If you cannot find procedure, post again.

You can't do it yourself on a '98. I tried and checked and checked everywhere...ended up being a dealer item by way of VADIS usage and OBD-II port. Not a DIY item on a '98.

You have to take it to the dealer. I just had mine done last year. I bought two perfect condition ones from eBay and had the dealer program them. They originally told me less than $50, then when I got there they wanted over $100. After some sweet talk they realized it's only a 20 minute job, so they charge 1/2 hour labor.
