The heat will not come on S40-V40 2001

The only way my heater will work is that if the temp. is set on 80. And if I turn it off of 80 it may be 3 hours before it works. I can not use the auto setting at all because of this. Ie. If the thermosata. is set on 72 the air temp. in the cabin will very cold and the a/c in off. Do I need a new climate unit.

Not sure I understand what you are saying, but I can make a comment that might help. In the old days the heater temperature was controlled by a water valve that controls the amount of water running through the heater core. The S40 however does not have any water valve. Insteadthere is a flap that controls how much air passes over the heater core and how much air bypass it. The manual system has a cable controlling this flap, but the automatic system has an electric motor controlling it. It is possible the motor broke, or the controller broke, or if you are lucky it is just that the flap position sensor is out of calibration. There is a simple procedure to initialize a recalibration, will see if I can find it. Otherwise, you will have to go to the dealers to get it repaired.

Does the SV40 have a sliding fan speed? Does the fan work at low speed as well as in high? If so, you need to check the water temp. You may have a broken thermostat, which is easily replaced.
