Clunking noise 850

The rear end of my ' 97 850 has recently developed a clunking sound (usually going over bumps). I checked to make sure that the spare tire wasn't the cause of the sound. I don't see anything loose underneath. It sounds like a 240's rear suspension with bad trailing arm bushings. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

That noise is usually caused by worn (separated) rear shock mounts. You can get new ones from FCP Grotton. You access them behind the rear seats under the trunk floor mat. Easy job.

      Hi Tom,

I'm thinking of replacing the shocks since they're original. My car has 140K miles. How hard are rear shocks to do on these 850's?

      Thanks,
      Dave

Easy! Actually getting to the upper mount is the hardest part of the job. You can't tell if the upper mounts are shot unless you see them from the top. As you bounce the car up and down watch the nut at the top of the shock shaft. If it moves up and down at all, the mount is shot. They do not come with the new shocks. They must be ordered separate.
        Good luck.

The rear shocks are a snap: basically two bolts on each side and you're done.

There is a 'bump stop' inside your rear rear spring that is held in place by a small, cheap plastic clip. You'll see the bump stop inside the spring on each side--if either are loose, could be the source of your problem....
